PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

The East Java chapter of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has strongly condemned the attack against Palestinians in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex last Friday (May 7), and called for an international sanction against Israel.

Head of the NU East Java K.H. Marzuqi Mustamar said here on Sunday that NU East Java also instructed nahdliyin (members of NU) to read Qunut Nazilah and Hizin Nashor prayers for the rest of the Ramadan fasting month this year.

"This is a form of solidarity, asking for help from Allah SWT to restore peace in Palestine in particular and also the world," he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairperson of the NU East Java K.H. Abdussalam Shohib condemned the Israeli attacks on Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and urged the Indonesian government to launch a strong protest at the United Nations.

"Violent practices and obvious violations continue to be carried out by Israel against Palestinians, such as the attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque. NU firmly urges the government to launch an official protest at the UN," the chief of the Denanyar Islamic boarding school in Jombang, said.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has condemned Israeli attack against Palestinian civilians in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex and the forced evictions of six Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, East Jerusalem.

"Indonesia equally condemns the use of force against Palestinian civilians in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex which has resulted in hundreds of casualties and thereby hurting the feeling of the Ummah," the Indonesian Foreign Ministry tweeted on its official Twitter account on Saturday.

Palestinians have been protesting against the forced displacement of people in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood following an Israeli court order, Aljazeera reported on May 5, 2021.

The Israeli district court in East Jerusalem approved a decision to vacate six Palestinian families from their homes in May in favour of Israeli settlers. The same court ruled that another seven families in Sheikh Jarrah are to leave their homes by August 1.

Palestinians fear that it is part of an ongoing effort by Israeli settlers to take control of Palestinian homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry said such forced evictions and use of force are contrary to various UN Security Council resolutions, International Humanitarian Law, particularly the IV Geneva Convention of 1949, and have the potential to increase tension and instability in the region.

"We urge the international community to take concrete steps to put a stop to the forced evictions of Palestinians and use of force against civilians," the ministry said.

Aljazeera reported that Israeli police fired rubber-coated metal bullets and stun grenades towards rock-hurling Palestinians at Al-Aqsa as anger grows over the potential eviction of Palestinians from homes on land claimed by Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem.

At least 205 Palestinians and 17 officers were injured in the night-time clashes at Islam’s third-holiest site and around East Jerusalem, Palestinian medics and Israeli police said, as thousands of Palestinians faced off with several hundred Israeli police in riot gear. (Antaranews)

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, through its Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL) in Denpasar, released 21,000 lobster seeds that were previously seized in the conservation area of Bangsring waters in Banyuwangi, East Java, in the beginning of May.

Director General for Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision, Tb Haeru Rahayu, in a statement received here, Sunday, said that the lobster seeds were seized in a bust of an attempted smuggling thwarted by officers.

The plan for illegal lobster seeds export was revealed by an initial tip obtained by officers, after which a joint operation carried out an investigation and caught the perpetrators.

Director General Rahayu explained that the Ministry continues to disseminate information in order to avert similar incidents of illegal lobster seed exports.

"Lobster seeds can be cultivated and grown in the country, and the retail price will grow higher, therefore boosting the economy for the people, fishermen, and cultivators," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL) in Denpasar Permana Yudiarso added that the release of lobster seeds should be carried out in a conservation area that is well-maintained.

He explained that the lobster seeds were released in the conservation area in Banyuwangi as they were found in the area.

The seeds were set to be illegally sent to Vietnam, as revealed by the investigation, and the scheme was set to cause losses of 1.5 billion rupiahs.

The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, reiterated that it is illegal to export lobster seeds. Under the Minister's leadership, the Ministry is determined to strengthen national lobster cultivation and exports, once the lobsters reach the appropriate size for consumption. (Antaranews)

State-owned fertilizer company PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) posted a profit of Rp929 billion in the first quarter of 2021, which was 104 percent higher than the target set in the company's business plan.

The profit was realized through efficiencies in operating and financial expenses as well as gas raw material consumption, and rising sales of non-fertilizer products and non-commercial fertilizer products, the company's finance and investment director Eko Taufik Wibowo disclosed in a written statement released on Thursday.

The efficiencies in operating expenses were driven by efforts made by the company, particularly in managing account receivables, low interest expenses, and achieving efficiency in various fields, including the supply chain, he informed.

"One of the efforts was the warehouse repositioning program to keep distribution costs down," he said.

Pupuk Indonesia recorded a sales volume of 3.3 million tons in the year ended March 31, 2021.

To realize the government's mandate, the company has been giving priority to meeting domestic needs, particularly for subsidized fertilizer, Wibowo said. As of March, 2021, the company has distributed 1.93 million tons of subsidized fertilizer, and the figure is expected to increase as the country is entering the planting season this year, he added.

Meanwhile, the total production of all types of fertilizers in the first three months of 2021 reached 4.93 million tons, or 107 percent of the target set in the business plan, he said.  (Antaranews)

Government spokesperson for COVID-19 handling Wiku Adisasmito urged people to abide by the ban on the homecoming exodus, reminding that the surge in cases could encumber health facilities in several regions.

"When the number of cases is high, health facilities will not be adequate in the event of a large increase in cases," Adisasmito remarked during a virtual press conference monitored from Jakarta on Thursday.

The government’s spokesperson invited various parties to take a cue from past experiences wherein the number of COVID-19 cases had significantly spiked during the long holidays, including during Eid al-Fitr last year.

To this end, the government finally issued a ban on the Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus that is in effect for the May 6-17 period during which scores of individuals usually traveled to their hometowns.

However, Adisasmito admitted to non-compliance to the ban among several people, who had traveled to their hometowns before the enforcement of the ban on homecoming exodus.

In the wake of this, the government has finally tightened travel conditions for the period from April 22 to May 5, 2021.

However, despite the enforcement of these restrictive regulations, several people travel with the required permits for those keen on making emergency trips.

"This will certainly be a burden on the regional government that must take precautionary measures against an increase in the number of people coming and the likelihood of infection occurring. The people should really understand the conditions that not every region has the same readiness," Adisasmito remarked.

On the occasion, the spokesperson noted that the Task Force had coordinated with various ministries and institutions to ensure all are on the same page regarding regulations on the homecoming exodus ban. (Antaranews)

Calling micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) critical pillars of the Indonesian economy, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has highlighted the pressing need for inter-sectoral collaboration to support their development.

“Support, cooperation, and collaboration in building national, effective, and technology-based MSMEs and industries ahead of Industry 4.0 era necessitate to be enhanced. By involving experts and business professionals, I believe that we all have the same spirit of aiding and developing MSMEs during this pandemic and digital era,” he said at an online event organized for the Leader, Executive & Entrepreneur Program of the Industry & Business Institute of Management (IBIMA) here on Wednesday.

According to the Cooperative and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Ministry, the total number of MSMEs in Indonesia has reached 64.2 million, with their contribution to the national GDP (gross domestic product) pegged at 61.07 percent, or Rp8,573.89 trillion.

MSMEs absorb 97 percent of the national work force and account for 60.4 percent of the total investment. However, a great number of MSMEs in Indonesia still face several challenges, Hartarto said.

To help MSMEs meet the challenges, the government has launched some support programs for them, he added. They include provision of incentives under the national economic recovery (PEN) program, the microcredit program (KUR), the Proud of Indonesian Product Movement (Gernas BBI), MSME marketing digitalization program, entrepreneur reinforcement of pre-employment card alumni through the microcredit program, and a long-term strategy to improve MSMEs through the omnibus law, he expounded.

The lessons learnt from the current pandemic include boosting the goods consumption pattern, which has shifted from offline to online platforms, as indicated by internet traffic of 15-20 percent, the minister said.

“This can be a momentum to accelerate the digital transformation and (tap) the potential of Indonesia’s digital economy that is still widely open, with its fourth-biggest population in the world as well as internet penetration reaching 196.7 million people,” Hartarto pointed out.

This would be in line with President Joko Widodo’s direction to transform 2021 into a year full of opportunities, a year of national and global economic recoveries, he said.

“I appreciate IBIMA that has organized such an activity because this also supports the government’s programs in facilitating MSMEs to grow and develop in this country,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the retail sector has seen an increase in sales during the first quarter of 2021, he said. Some sub-groups of spending that rose during the first quarter of 2021 were supermarkets, restaurants, medical and household goods, and fashion.

Based on the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), Indonesia’s manufacturing sector also showed an accelerated growth by April, 2021, with the index breaking its highest record to reach 54.6 from 53.2 the previous month.

“The improvement in demand, either in industry or sub-group of retail spending, is expected to forge the spirit of the industry players and MSMEs to become more productive,” Hartarto said. (Antaranews)

Indonesia’s open unemployment rate dropped to 6.26 percent in February, 2021 from 7.07 percent in August, 2020, according to a survey conducted by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). "The open unemployment rate in February, 2021 stood at 6.26 percent, falling from 7.07 percent recorded in August (2020). This means there has been an improvement, though it has not returned to the previous level," BPS chief Suhariyanto said at an online press conference here on Wednesday.

The decline in the open unemployment rate was higher among women than men, he disclosed.

The open unemployment rate in women was 6.46 percent in August, 2020 and dropped to 5.41 percent in February, 2021, he said. Meanwhile, the open unemployment rate in men was 7.48 percent in August, 2020 and fell to 6.81 percent in February, 2021, he added.

"The open unemployment rate for women and men dropped 1.05 percent and 0.65 percent, respectively," he said.

The open unemployment rate in several provinces, including Jakarta, Banten, and West Java also declined quickly during the period, he informed.

The highest open unemployment rate of 10.12 percent was recorded in Riau Islands and the lowest rate of 3.29 percent was recorded in West Sulawesi, he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's economy continued to shrink at 0.74 percent year-on-year (yoy) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021, according to the Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

"Economic growth in the first quarter of 2021 contracted by 0.74 percent," Suhariyanto stated.

He  attributed the improvement in growth to an upward trend since the GDP contracted 5.32 percent in the second quarter of 2020.

"In comparison with the previous quarter, this shows a significant improvement. The contraction of 0.74 percent shows signs of increasingly concrete economic recovery," he remarked. (Antaranews)
