PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

Jakarta. Indonesia plans to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix through several strategies, including halting imports of fossil fuels and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) by 2030 and expediting solar power projects.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Arifin Tasrif, made the remarks in a statement released here on Tuesday.

"We are still importing fuel oil and LPG now. By 2030, the government is targeting to stop fuel oil imports, and, if possible, stop imports of LPG," Tasrif informed.

In 2021, imports of crude oil are projected to reach 118.4 million barrels, valued at US$2,297 billion. Meanwhile, imports of LPG are projected to touch 7.2 million metric tons, valued at an estimated US$411 per metric ton, the minister noted.

The high imports of crude oil and LPG have impacted the current account deficit, which has continued to increase, he said.

The decision to stop imports of fossil fuels demonstrates Indonesia's firmness in implementing the Paris Agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energy, he added.

"Indonesia needs to anticipate this to encourage the use of renewable energy in the national energy mix," Tasrif said.

Indonesia is targeting to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 23 percent by 2025 from the 11.2 percent currently, he disclosed.

According to data provided by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, the capacity of renewable energy-generating power plants in Indonesia has reached 10,467 MW — with hybrid power plants contributing 3.6 MW, wind-generated plants 154.3 MW, solar plants 153.8 MW, bio energy 1,903.5 MW, geothermal energy 2,130.7 MW, and hydro power plants 6,121 MW.

The government is targeting to have 24 thousand MW of installed capacity of environment-friendly electricity by 2025, and increase it to 38 thousand MW by 2035, Tasrif said.

"We are attempting to use solar as the backbone of our national energy source," he added.

The government has prepared strategies to develop solar energy, which include the development of large-scale solar energy plants (PLTS) on former mining sites and unproductive land; floating photovoltaic solar power plants; rooftop solar power plants; and, conversion of steam-generated power plants (PLTU) to PLTS, the minister informed.

In addition, the government has initiated plans to use Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara as a solar energy source given its potential to produce 1,800 MW of electricity per year, 25 percent above the national average, he said.

The intensity of solar radiation in Sumba Island is 4.8 kWh per day, and there is abundant land in the province, thus, establishing a PLTS with a capacity of 50 thousand MW is possible, he added.

The PLTS could supply electricity from Sumba Island to Java, he said.

In 2020, the installed capacity of PLTS in Indonesia stood at 153.8 MW, or 0.07 percent of the total realization of mixed energy of 10,500 MW, or 11.2 percent of the national energy mix. (Antaranews)

Jakarta. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has lauded Indonesia’s stance on maintaining the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and implementing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2231.

He conveyed the praise during a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, in Jakarta on Monday, as part of his Indonesian visit, which he described as "Ramadhan Diplomacy".

Meanwhile, Marsudi expressed her appreciation of the growing friendship between the two nations, particularly in the economic field, and expressed the hope that they would further improve business relations through the Iran-Indonesia Joint Business Commission and agreements that are currently under negotiation.

During their meeting, the two foreign ministers exchanged views on the latest developments in the peace process in Afghanistan and expressed support for international law.

At the meeting, Zarif called attention to the 70 years of friendship between Iran and Indonesia and praised Jakarta for its push to maintain the JCPOA at the UN Security Council, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a written statement.

Expressing happiness at the improved trade relations between the two nations, Zarif referred to the large capacity for bilateral business relations and highlighted the significance of accelerating the conclusion of the preferential trade agreement between the two countries.

He also conveyed Iran's preparedness to continue negotiations on the issue.

At the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Austria in early March this year, Indonesia had urged the United States to return to the negotiating table to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue, in accordance with the commitments contained in the JCPOA. It also asked the US and Iran to cooperate with the IAEA to fulfill their obligations under the JCPOA.

During the meeting, Indonesian Permanent Representative to Austria and the UN, Darmansjah Djumala, expressed concern over the US pullout of the JCPOA and the re-imposition of unilateral sanctions on Iran, according to a written statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna.

Indonesia also welcomed positive signals from the US government to get involved again in the JCPOA through a multilateral forum, it added. (Antaranews)

Jakarta. The Indonesian government, which is striving to inoculate 40,349,049 people by the middle of this year, has vaccinated at least 10,966,934 citizens as of Monday, as per data provided by the COVID-19 task force.

The nation has added 138,515 recipients on Monday against the figure recorded on Sunday, the task force informed.

Of the total vaccine recipients, at least 6,050,732 have received their second shots, it reported.

On Monday, as the government continued its vaccination program in the fasting month of Ramadhan, at least 500 art and cultural workers hailing from Jakarta and its satellite cities were administered their first shots of the COVID-19 vaccine at the National Gallery of Indonesia.

Enthusiasm was palpable among the participating artists, who comprised members of the Javanese theatre Bharata 'Wayang Orang' and members of the musical group Bimbo.

Indonesia has been striving to win the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic since March last year.

To stem the transmission of the lethal virus, the government has rolled out a nationwide vaccination program since January 13 this year. The program will extend up to March, 2022.

During the period, the government is targeting to inoculate at least 181.5 million people, comprising 1.3 million paramedics and 17.4 million public sector workers in 34 provinces.

The Health Ministry has estimated that vaccinating the targeted population could take 15 months.

The first phase of the government's immunization program has been segregated into two periods: January-April, 2021 and April, 2021-March, 2022.

As of April 17, 2021, the number of COVID-19 vaccine recipients reached 10,801,244, according to data from the Task Force for COVID-19 Handling.

Even amid vaccine rollouts, Indonesia has been reeling under the impact of the coronavirus pandemic that has crippled economies across the globe.

Indonesia's public health and economy have suffered a major blow, and some sectors, including travel and tourism, have been severely battered by the pandemic.

To revive the tourism sector, the Indonesian government is seeking to implement a travel bubble scheme with some countries, including Singapore.

In the first stage of its implementation, the Indonesia-Singapore travel corridor will officially run between Singapore and Bintan, Riau Islands. (Antaranews)

Jakarta. Mount Merapi’s lava dome volume in the middle of its crater’s peak is estimated to reach 1,681,000 cubic meters, Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) stated.

“Morphological analysis of peak area based on photo from south-east photo sector on April 14-18 2021 showed the volume of middle dome reached 1,681,000 cubic meters,” Head of BPPTKG Hanik Humaida noted in a written statement received here on Sunday.

The volume of lava dome in the middle of Merapi’s peak is larger than the volume of lava dome on the southwest side of the volcano that reaches 1,024,800 cubic meters with a growth rate of 12,200 cubic meters per day.

Mount Merapi has two lava domes that both grow. The first lava dome lies on the southwest side of the volcano, above from the eruption that occurred in 1997. The second lava dome was observed by BPPTKG on February 4, 2021, in the middle of the crater’s peak.

Humaida explained that  on April 9-15, 2021, Merapi emitted searing clouds six times as far as 1.8 kilometers in the southwest direction and spewed lava 119 times as far as 1.5 kilometers in the southwest direction and seven times in the southeast direction.

The seismicity intensity this week is relatively stable compared to the previous week, she added.

Meanwhile, the Merapi’s characteristic shape observed by EDM (Electronic Distance Measurement) and GPS (Global Positioning System) this week did not show any significant changes.

BPPTKG continues to maintain the status of Mount Merapi at Level III (alert).

Residents are urged to stay vigilant of the potential impact of volcanic lava and hot clouds from Mount Merapi in the south-southwest sector that encompasses Kuning, Bedong, Krasak, Bebeng, and Putih rivers.

If there are any eruptions, Mount Merapi’s volcanic material can flow as far as three kilometers from the mountain’s peak, Humaida informed. (AntaranewS)

Papua Deputy Governor Klemen Tinal requested security personnel to restore law and order in Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, to enable the local administration to restart its public services.

"The education, health, and administrative services must resume immediately," Tinal noted in a statement circulated on the Papua provincial government's official website that ANTARA quoted here, Saturday.

Tinal also urged local residents to facilitate the authorities' endeavors to resume public services in communities following the fatal shootings of two teachers that had forced several non-native Papuans to flee their homes.

Currently, a joint team of personnel from the Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) and the Nemangkawi Task Force have brought under control the security situation in Beoga Sub-district. Papua Province has borne witness to a string of violent attacks by notorious armed Papuan criminals targeting civilians and security personnel in the past two years. On April 8, 2021, several armed Papuan criminals opened fire at a kiosk in Julukoma Village, Beoga Sub-district, at about 9:30 a.m. local time.

Head of Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo. (ANTARA/Martha Herlinawati Simanjuntak) -

Head of Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo has issued a warning to the people at large to not breach the government's homebound travel ban.

"The government's ban on homebound travel, or 'mudik,' is purely aimed at breaking the chain of COVID-19 transmission and contagion," Monardo remarked here on Saturday.

To this end, Monardo has urged all members of communities nationwide to diligently adhere to the government's ban on "mudik" before, during, and after the Idul Fitri holiday season.

The government has banned homebound travel on May 6-17, but the people are not allowed to travel before and after that period of time, he pointed out.

The BNPB head highlighted the government’s concern that a large-scale movement of people before the Ramadan fasting month ends and during the Idul Fitri holiday season may trigger the spread of the COVID-19 contagion."We do not want a family gathering to end with tragic events. We lose our beloved ones (due to COVID-19). Please do not let such tragedies occur," he stated.

The coronavirus outbreak initially struck the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019 and then spread to various parts of the world, including countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Indonesian government announced the country's first confirmed cases on March 2, 2020.

Since then, the central and regional governments have made persistent efforts to flatten the coronavirus curve by imposing healthcare protocols and social restrictions.

To break the chain of transmission of COVID-19, which has impacted the purchasing power of scores of families in Indonesia, the government had also banned "mudik" last year.

Indonesia is also striving to win the fight against this global pandemic of the coronavirus disease through a national vaccination program.

According to the Health Ministry, it will take around 15 months to vaccinate about 181.5 million people under the national program."We need 15 months to accomplish it. The time frame for conducting the vaccination is counted from January 2021 to March 2022," the Health Ministry's spokesperson for the vaccination program, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, stated recently.

During the period, the government is targeting to inoculate some 181.5 million people, including 1.3 million paramedics and 17.4 million public sector workers in 34 provinces, according to Tarmizi.

Tarmizi noted that the first phase of the government's immunization program was divided into two periods: January-April 2021 and April 2021-March 2022//ANT

Dinna Prapto Raharja, an international relations expert from Synergy Policies. (ANTARA)

The Asia-Africa Conference needs to be used as a forum to promote equal access to COVID-19 vaccines, an expert has said ahead of the 66th commemoration of the conference on April 18, 2021.Dinna Prapto Raharja, an international relations expert from Synergy Policies, told ANTARA on Friday that The Asia-Africa Conference should be revived so that it can be used as a platform or a forum to promote the position of developing countries demanding equal rights of access to vaccines.

The Asia-Africa Conference as a forum is unique because its ideology recognizes the equal rights of nations, "instead of about who can pay how much, or who wants to follow whom”Therefore, the conference can also be a forum for countries to make a joint effort to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic synergistically, she added.

She also emphasized that the Asia-Africa Conference serves as a reminder that in conditions of adversity, developing countries need to revert to solidarity as fellow countries who want peace and respect for human dignity, respect for state sovereignty, and equality of all nations.

Hence, the spirit of Dasa Sila Bandung (the Ten Principles of Bandung) -- which is the result of the first conference held from April 18-24, 1955 -- needs to be re-appointed.

So that in a situation of distress due to the COVID-19 pandemic and globalization, which turns out to not fully humanize nations fairly, the spirit of Dasa Sila Bandung may guide countries not to prioritize short and narrow interests and go their separate ways.

Humanity and Solidarity' is the theme proposed by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the commemoration of the 66th anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference in 2021.

The similarity of fate and the spirit of solidarity that gave birth to the conference of nations in Asia and Africa 66 years ago has again found its relevance when the world together builds solidarity to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic//ANT
