State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.
In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.
Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.
"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.
The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.
Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.
PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.
Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.
"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.
The government is aiming to draw 1 million tourists to Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, through massive development of facilities in the super-priority tourist destination.
"For the first target, Labuan Bajo must attract at least 1 million tourists, in keeping with the capacity of its airport. But once the runway has been extended and wide-bodied planes can land at the airport, the figure will increase to 1.5 million," President Joko Widodo said while observing the rearrangement of Rinca Island in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday.
The rearrangement of Rinca Island lasted two years and involved a lot of funding, including for the rearrangement of the island, the renovation of the old port, the expansion and extension of roads, the extension of the airport's runway, and the expansion of Komodo airport's terminal, he informed in a statement streamed on the Youtube channel of the Presidential Secretariat, Jakarta.
"I think they all must be calculated and there must be a return (on investment)," he added.
The head of state said he had asked Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, to carry out tourism-related activities in Labuan Bajo in association with the local government.
"Don't let trash scatter anywhere. Beware of trivial things that foreign and domestic tourists will look at. They will come back or not because of the trivial thing, among others. Our hospitality to serve tourists is also very important," he remarked. (Antaranews)
The 3rd Meeting of the 2022 G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) discussed cross-border data governance and reliable free data flow, among other topics, Communication and Informatics Minister, Johnny G. Plate, has informed.
The DEWG is one of the working groups of the G20 that focuses on issues related to the digital economy and highlights the role of digital transformation on economic and social growth.
"The discussion on the issues will become more essential since the international community increasingly needs applicable data management based on common views, approaches, and practices -- a condition which has not been fulfilled," the minister stated at a press conference on the meeting here on Wednesday.
The world cannot avoid a future that involves heavy reliance on data by various public and private institutions, he noted.
Hence, the development of cross-border data governance will need to pay attention to various important principles of justice, legality, transparency, and reciprocity.
The implementation of the principles will not only encourage the recovery of the global economy, but also the establishment of concrete and comprehensive collaborations to accommodate the development of digital innovation.
"The issue does not only concern developing countries, but also developed countries and poor countries," Plate said.
Without proper and inclusive data governance, data utilization will not run equitably, hence it is possible that data will become a limited commodity, resulting in group-based data utilization, he emphasized.
"Ideally, data utilization must benefit all parties," he remarked.
Further discussions on data utilization, including data security, will be conducted on the second day of the meeting, that is, on Thursday (July 21, 2022), he informed.
"We will seek common ground and agreement on global joint data governance," he added.
The 3rd DEWG meeting is taking place in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai district, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, from July 20 to 22.
The meeting is being attended in person by 17 delegates from G20 nations. Meanwhile, delegates from Italy, Argentina, and China are participating in the meeting virtually. (Antaranews)
Indonesia is not experiencing a crisis currently, but it must remain vigilant amid the ongoing global uncertainty, with many countries facing food and energy crises and high inflation, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has said.
At a press conference on investment realization in the second quarter of 2022, he said that Indonesia’s current economic growth is quite good, thus, although the inflation rate has increased, the government has managed to maintain it well.
In addition, Indonesia’s assets have continued to increase, while the country’s debt ratio is still at a reasonable level, hence economic growth, as well as people’s consumption and purchasing power, can be maintained, he added.
However, the global crisis has still affected Indonesia since the country needs to import some food and energy commodities to meet domestic demand.
Imported food commodities can be substituted by abundant local food products, he pointed out. However, the energy issue is still quite complicated to resolve, he noted.
Hence, Indonesia must prepare for unfavorable conditions if the crisis results in an increase in subsidies for the energy sector, he said.
"Our problem is (meeting the demand for) fuel. It is the reason that we have to quickly shift from (using) fossil fuels to new and renewable energy,” the minister added.
For instance, the government is encouraging the utilization of electric motors and electric stoves to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), he noted.
Furthermore, he highlighted President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) efforts to resolve the global food and energy crises by directly visiting and communicating with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.
He said that the attempt had a huge impact on the food and energy sectors, which had stalled due to the conflict between the two countries.
"As soon as the President returned (from the visit), there were a number of policies in the food and logistic sectors which began to work," Lahadalia said.
The visit also showed that Indonesia cannot be restrained by any country, politically or economically, he added.
He also lauded the President and First Lady Iriana Widodo’s visit to Ukraine and Russia in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and a raging conflict between the two countries.
“What is the message (of the visit)? It is to build the world’s trust,” he remarked. (Antaranews)
The market sounding for building a number of facilities in Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara (IKN), will begin in August 2022, head of the IKN Authority, Bambang Susantono, has informed.
The authority is ready to accommodate the interests of parties wishing to participate in the development of health and education facilities and the provision of daily necessities in IKN 1A area, or Nusantara's Central Government Core Area.
The market sounding will begin along with the start of infrastructure work including core buildings in August, Susantono said in a press statement delivered virtually on Wednesday.
The infrastructure works cover land consolidation, land opening and access to logistics.
As such, the development of infrastructures and core buildings will be on full scale by next year.
In addition, the development of supporting facilities will also be carried out, starting from health and education facilities, daily necessities shops, to an amusement center.
According to Susantono, the development of Nusantara as a livable city is targeted to be completed by 2024.
A complete urban ecosystem comprising education facilities, health facilities, daily facilities, and facilities connected to the amusement center will be developed, he informed.
The development of the IKN will involve the local community residing around the city, namely in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser, and East Kalimantan.
During the event, Susantono also informed that the authority is holding work and business trainings for local residents of North Penajam Paser, which are aligned with the development of the new capital.
As a result, they will also become an inseparable part of the IKN’s development. The authority is keen to see active people’s participation in the future. (Antaranews)
Fishermen will play an important role in maintaining Indonesia’s food sovereignty in the future, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir and Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Minister Teten Masduki said on Tuesday.
Fishermen, on their part, will require certainty of market access so that their products can be absorbed in the market at an affordable price, the SOEs Minister said at the 4th National Conference of the Indonesian Traditional Fishers Association (KNTI) here on Tuesday.
Hence, the SOEs ministry is providing business loans and aid to empower fishermen's wives to develop their own businesses through the Prosperous Family Economic Development (Mekaar) Program.
He said he expects that in the future, the program will be able to help the women to improve their family’s welfare and become economically independent.
However, he noted that the distribution of loans needs to be encouraged since currently, the disbursed value of loans has only reached around Rp1.6 trillion (US$106.2 million) out of a total allocation of around Rp46 trillion (US$3.05 billion).
On the same occasion, the Cooperatives and SMEs Minister said that the marine sector is one of the leading sectors of Indonesia’s economy, thus it is very concerning that there are still many fishermen’s families who are in the low-income class.
He then invited fishermen to join cooperatives so that their businesses could have formal legal status.
Joining cooperatives could minimize the risk of price fraud when they sell their catch at fish selling centers since the facility will be managed by cooperatives, he added.
The government has committed to developing financial literacy and digital skills of farmers, breeders, and fishermen to develop an inclusive and productive economic sector by increasing knowledge and technology transfer, as well as strengthening economic partnerships and assistance.
Farmers, breeders, fishermen, as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) actors are one of the priority groups targeted for the development of inclusive finance, as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 114 of 2020 concerning the National Strategy for Inclusive Finance. Community education is vital for sustainable peat restoration and mangrove rehabilitation, Deputy for Planning and Evaluation at the National Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM), Satyawan Pudyatmoko, has said.
“(It is important to gauge whether) the community is ready or not (for carrying out rehabilitation), thus, the education of the community is the key to (achieving) sustainable rehabilitation for mangroves and peatlands," he informed at a media meeting here on Tuesday.
As per existing procedures, before carrying out rehabilitation, it is necessary to conduct a biogeophysical evaluation to ascertain whether an area can be rehabilitated, Pudyatmoko explained.
After that, it is essential to ensure the building of awareness on the subject among residents living around the area where mangrove rehabilitation is being carried out, he said.
If the community is not ready, the education department of BRGM is required to first conduct socialization related to rehabilitation and restoration efforts and about the importance of peat and mangroves for the environment and the people living in the area, he added.
Such preparation takes at least a year, and once there is consensus among the community, mangrove rehabilitation or peat restoration is executed, Pudyatmoko added.
The same thing was also conveyed by expert staff at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Trijoko M. Soleh Oedin, while making a presentation at the media event.
Positioning the community is one of the crucial steps that must be taken in peat restoration and mangrove rehabilitation, whether carried out by BRGM, the Environment and Forestry Ministry, or other ministries or institutions, he emphasized.
"How to position the community is also an important thing to do. Technocratically, (in case) the canal blocking (for water retention) has been built, but it is terrible (if) people are displaced," he explained.
For this reason, he said, educating the community about rehabilitation is one measure that can help change people's behaviors and prevent the practice of draining peat. (Antaranews)
Intellectual property rights may serve as a source of income for creative economic players, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly has informed.
"As such, intellectual property rights will surely provide economic benefits," the minister noted in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights at the Law and Human Rights Ministry is scheduled to disseminate information on intellectual property rights in Surakarta City, Central Java, on Wednesday (July 20, 2022).
Surakarta will be the second city to disseminate information on intellectual property rights through an activity themed "Yasonna Listens" at the Surakarta City Hall.
During the activity, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly and Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka will hold a discussion with the intellectual property rights community, including local residents.
"Through this activity, we want to make the public aware that protecting intellectual property rights is very important," he remarked.
Apart from having a positive impact on the source of the people's economy, protecting intellectual property rights may also serve as evidence to face any claim from an irresponsible party, he affirmed.
The activity is a manifestation of the government's support to always improve and update regulations and public services related to intellectual property rights, so that they will remain relevant to the current era, he emphasized.
To assist the public in protecting intellectual property rights, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights provides services to register copy rights, brands, patents, and industrial designs online, he stated.
In addition, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights launched the Automatic Approval of Copy Rights Registration (POP HC) early this year to accelerate the registration of copy rights.
"Before POP HC was launched, the registration process took one day, and now, it takes less than 10 minutes," he remarked. (Antaranews)
Deputy Minister of Health, Dante Saksono Harbuwono, has predicted that infections caused by the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of Omicron in Indonesia will pass their peak this week.
“Hopefully, the cases will not increase again in the future because the increase in BA.4 and BA.5 cases is a third of the Omicron cases," he noted during the submission of a presidential decree regarding the BPJS Health Supervisory Board at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture’s office in Jakarta on Monday.
As previously known, the Ministry of Health had predicted that COVID-19 cases in Indonesia would peak at around 20 thousand cases per day—a level that was recorded in the second to fourth week of July 2022.
Based on data from the Ministry of Health, as many as 81 percent of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia have been caused by the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants.
Harbuwono said that the peak of the current coronavirus wave was predicted to have been reached on July 16, 2022. Active cases on that day increased by 1,621, bringing the total to 26,594 cases, while the number of confirmed positive cases increased by 4,329.
The figure was double compared to the end of June 2022, when it was recorded at 2 thousand cases per day.
On July 17, the number of active cases fell to 956, bringing the total to 27,550 cases, with positive confirmed cases pegged at 3,540.
"All slides have increased, but are still in the 10 percent condition from the highest case last month. We estimate that it has reached its peak," Harbuwono stated.
Cases are currently peaking in Jakarta Province, where the transmission rate has reached Level 3, while the nationwide transmission rate is still at Level 1, he added.
"Hopefully, cases in Jakarta will soon decrease. Although the cases are still increasing, but (they are) still in small number," he disclosed. (antaranews)
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized the need for the Y20 (Youth 20) forum to promote two roles of youth, notably as the agents of peace and change, for a better future for the world.
"Hence, for a better future, the Y20 must be able to advance the two roles of youth," Foreign Minister Marsudi stated while speaking at the Y20 Indonesia Summit held in a hybrid format here on Tuesday.
The Y20, as a youth consultative forum of the G20 member countries, whose presidency this year is held by Indonesia, is tasked with optimizing the two roles in handling global issues.
Playing the role of agents of peace and being future leaders, the youth must play an important part in ensuring peace and a prosperous and sustainable future, she affirmed.
In a globalized and interconnected world, this can be done by fostering dialogues and building bridges based on diversity, she affirmed.
"These are the principles that must be put forward to ensure peace," she stressed.
As the agents of change, Y20 must be able to overcome various challenges and change the world for the better as well as to think of innovative solutions.
"In this context, the youth must invest in issues that can have an impact on the future, such as health, digital transformation, energy transition, and also (ensure) a better future for the next generation," she stated.
Marsudi welcomed recommendations of the Y20 summit on efforts to make progress in addressing these priority issues.
The minister expressed hope that the Y20 peak event would serve as an effective platform to pass the leadership on to youth groups.
"The youth must be a source of solutions for the world to recover together and recover better," she remarked.
Amid the current global challenges, the transformative capabilities of 1.2 billion young people around the world could make an extraordinary contribution to global solutions, the minister said. (antaranews)
