There is no endless storm. There is no war that lasts forever. Maybe, that's the right phrase to describe the new phase of the United States and China trade war that has occurred for two years and caused a slowdown in the global economy. United States President, Donald Trump and Chinese Deputy Prime Minister, Liu He signed the first phase of a trade peace agreement on Wednesday 15 January at a meeting at the White House. Even though this phase I agreement has been signed, the US will still impose tariffs on imported goods from China until there is a phase II agreement. However, the US agreed to suspend tariffs on a number of electronic products worth $ 160 billion US dollars. The tariff is valid on December 15, 2019. This phase I agreement is expected to be a good start after the two countries are involved in a trade war. However , many parties still doubted what would happen after the signing of this first phase of the trade agreement.

The thing that can be underlined is that in the agreement China will buy more goods from America.
This will slightly cover the impact of trade wars that have been felt by America for 2 years. The impression is that the agreement that was signed last did produce several victories for the US. Because China agreed to buy US goods of around US $ 200 billion. More over, in the next two yearsUS companies will get more access to the Chinese market, and more intellectual property protection. But the Chinese economy is actually also seen as getting a short-term boost from the trade agreement. There are some stimulatory measures, such as more spending by local governments, lower taxes, and more bank credit. A ceasefire can also help reduce the slump in business and investment sentiment in China.

The question now, how is the impact on countries whose economy has also been affected by the American-Chinese trade war so far? In 2020, the tariff rates that have been applied or announced will make global economic growth drop 0.8 percent. This was revealed by IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgiva. Global economic conditions have already been affected by the trade war that has occurred over the past 2 years.

Of course, the world community welcomes phase I of the trade agreement between America and China.
Yet, the effects of a trade war need time to recover. For the internal conditions of China and America and globally as well. Hopefully, the next phase of the trade agreement will immediately accelerate the improvement of the global economy.

Or Where Do You From?

Today’s lesson is all about Dari Mana Asal Anda? Or Where Do You From?. Listen to this conversation between Kevin and Pak Imran. They are talking in the car on the way to a hotel.

Imran

Mas Kevin, dari mana asal Anda?

Kevin

Saya dari Darwin, Pak, Australia.

Imran

Oh, mas orang Australia.

Now I am going to introduce some vocabularies and expressions related to the topic today.

Dari mana asal Anda?

(2X) which means

Where do you come from?

Asal Anda dari mana?

Where do you come from?

Anda berasal dari mana?

Where do you come from?

Saya dari Darwin, Pak, Australia.

I come from Darwin, Australia, sir.

Saya berasal dari Indonesia.

I come from Indonesia

Oh, Mas orang Australia.

Ouh I see.

In the conversation pak Imran said Mas Kevin, dari mana asal Anda? To ask about someone’s origin, you can say:

Dari mana asal Anda?or

Asal Anda dari mana? or

Anda berasal dari mana?

The word dari mana (where do you come from) can be used to ask someone’s origin. To respond the question, you can mention the city/town or your own country. Let’s follow the next examples:

Dari mana asal Anda?      (where do you come from?)

Dari Jakarta                                    (from Jakarta)

Saya dari Indonesia                       (I come from Indonesia)

The processing industry still consistently provides the largest contribution to national exports. From January to December 2019, exports of processing industry products were able to reach more than US$126.00 billion dollars or 75.5 percent of Indonesia's total exports over the past year.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in Jakarta on Thursday, January 16, 2020, the government was indeed focusing on increasing the value of exports to improve Indonesia's trade balance. Therefore, the manufacturing sector has a very important role to achieve these goals. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency, the five sectors that contributed the most to the achievement of the export value of the manufacturing industry during 2019, were the food industry, basic metals, chemicals and articles of chemicals, the clothing industry, paper and paper products industry .

The five main export destinations for Indonesia's manufactured products in the January-December 2019 period are the United States, China, Japan, Singapore and India. Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized that the government continues to expand export markets, especially to non-traditional countries.

He explained that various strategic steps had been carried out by the Ministry of Industry in an effort to increase the value of exports from the manufacturing sector. These efforts include industrial development through increasing competitiveness and preparing superior products. Also the use of free trade agreements (FTA) such as the acceleration of FTA negotiations, expansion into non-traditional markets, and the initiation of bilateral FTAs according to industry needs. In addition, an international promotion program was implemented through promotion and export assistance, increasing the capacity of producers for exports, as well as linking and matching with global production networks.

Minister Agus Gumiwang added, Indonesia is the official country partner at the Hannover Messe 2020 event. This could be a good momentum to introduce the readiness of Indonesia's industry in the 4.0 era, promote investment and export cooperation in the industrial sector, and strengthen bilateral cooperation with Germany and with countries oriented towards technological innovation. This event is important for Indonesia not only because it is the first country in ASEAN to become an Official Partner Country, but also supports national branding efforts on Indonesia's position as one of the new powers of the world economy and global manufacturing players. The exhibition will take place in Hannover, Germany, from 20 to 24 April 2020.
