Today in History over RRI World Service -Voice of Indonesia. We start from an event on August 23, 1939, when Germany and Soviet Union signed agreement not to attack each other.

On August 23, 1939, Germany and Soviet Union agreed to make Non-Aggression Treaty not to attack each other. The treaty was signed by foreign affairs minister of the two countries. This shocked the world because powerfully, the two countries competed. After Nazi invaded Czechoslovakia, England affirmed its position to face invasion of Nazi. Prime minister of Neville Chamberlain at that time also declared its concern that Poland was being threatened by Invasion of Nazi. England felt obliged to assist Poland to avoid from Nazi. Thus, the only power, which was considered to be able to counterbalance Germany, was Soviet Union. Unfortunately, Hitler read this purpose and rushed to close Stalin until the Non-Aggression Treaty between the two countries was formed. But Germany violated the treaty by launching Barbarosa Operation on June 21st, 1941 to invade Russia.

The next event was in 1945, when the establishment of People’s Security Agency became the forerunner of the Indonesian Military.

President Soekarno officially announced the establishment of People’s Security Agency on August 23rd, 1945. The establishment of People’s Security Agency was alteration of the result of the session of the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence on August 19, 1945 which before planning to establish National Army. The alteration was finally decided on August 22nd, 1945 not to establish national army. The leaders at that time chose to take diplomatic approach in a bid to get recognition on the independence which was just proclaimed. Through the government’s declaration on October 5th, 1945, People’s Security Agency was changed to be People’s Security Army and after experiencing several times alteration of name, finally it became Indonesian Military.

And the last event is that in 1949, Round Table Conference began to take place in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Round Table Conference was a meeting which was held in The Hague, the Netherlands from August 23rd until November 2nd, 1949 between representatives of Republic of Indonesia, the Netherlands and Bijeenkomst voor Federaal Overleg to represent some countries which were created by the Netherlands on Indonesia islands. The conference was a bright moment for Indonesian people to gain recognition of dignity from the Netherlands in a bid to solve conflict between Indonesia and the Netherlands. Indonesia tries to become an independent country from the invaders. The outcome of the conference was that the dignity from the Dutch colonial government had to be handed over to Republic of Indonesia, except Western Papua. Indonesia wanted all ex-regions of the East Indies to become Indonesian regions, while the Dutch wanted to make the Western Papua separated because of different ethnic. The conference was closed without concrete decision on it. Therefore, paragraph 2 mentioned that the Western Papua was not part of the handing over and the problem would be solved within one year.

More than 3 thousands of Aceh residents and their neighboring areas enthusiastically joined health walking and traditional party for tribute of state-owned enterprises -BUMN being present for Indonesia. The activity was to enliven the commemoration of the 73^rd independence  day of Indonesia in Banda Aceh. In 2018, Ministry of State-owned enterprises appointed Indonesia Bank Negara Indonesia -BNI as major coordinator supported by PT Surveyor Indonesia to hold the 2018 program of the state-owned enterprises in Aceh province. One of  the activities is healthy walking. It was centralized in  Blang Padang, Banda Aceh on Sunday (19/8) and was attended by Mayor of Banda Aceh, Aminullah Usman, Vice President Director of BNI, Herry Sidharta and Director for Indonesia Surveyor Finance, Rosmanidar Zulkifli. Vice President Director of   BNI, Herry Sidharta on his press release on Sunday  (19/8) said that the healthy walking is one of participations of BNI and  Surveyor Indonesia in a series of activities of  ”BUMN being present for  Indonesia initiated by Ministry of BUMN to enliven the commemoration of the 73^rd independence day of Indonesia. Moreover, BUMN all provinces in Indonesia are expected to trigger economic development in the regions particularly in outermost, and remote regions.

Next information is that avocado from West Pasaman  becomes  menu for athletes  of Asian Games.

Avocado from West Pasaman, West Sumatera becomes menu for athletes of Asian Games 2018 at exhibition and conference of Asian Games 2018 at the office of the Ministry of Youth and Sports  in Jakarta.  General Director of Remote Development, Ministry of Villages, Remote Development and Transmigration, Samsul Widodo on Press Release on Sunday said that West Pesaman is categorized as remote district. But in fact, it has extraordinary potential. The Ministry wants to introduce fruits, especially tropical fruit to athletes and guests of  Asian Games. Avocado type of cape is the original product of Girimaju village, Nagari Kotobaru, West  Pasaman regency. He said that to keep increasing productivity and efficiency of product in the remote area, he will apply concept of "smart farming". Meanwhile, Head of Farmers Group Association “Karya Bersama” in  Nagari Kotobaru,  Usnil Amri explained that his side becomes proud for his district to promote avocado type of cape to athletes of Asian Games 2018 and embassy.  Amri said that athletes of Asian Games 2018 will be invited to visit  Expo and Conference Asian Games 2018. They will be accompanied by representatives from their  embassy.

Last information of  Mosaic of Archipelago is that humanitarian ship anchors in Lombok.

Lombok Humanitarian Ship which transported thousand tons of relief assistance arrived in Carik port, North Lombok regency on Monday morning (20/8). The assistance was transported by Banjarmasin Indonesian Warship after sailing for 3 days. The presence of Lombok Humanitarian Ship was welcomed directly by Quick Response Action  and the Indonesian Navy. The process of loading and unloading logistic was also witnessed by Senior Vice President of ACT, Syuhelmaidi Syukur and some representatives of the Indonesian Military officers. He further said that the assistance which had arrived consists of staple needs, blankets, ready clothing, medicines, field tents and many others. Syuhelmaidi said at Carik port ,North  Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara on Monday (20/8) that the logistics given by Indonesian people arrived in Lombok after sailing from Jakarta on 17 August. He also stated that the logistic is expected to alleviate the burden of evacuees during emergency response phase and recovery. By tagline “Bersatu Bantu Lombok” (Together Helping Lombok), it is hoped that support and participation of all Indonesian people are getting stronger.

We begin with Kompas on "Inspiration from Medals."

Indonesia isreally happy in the two days since the opening of the Asian Games 2018. Until Monday (20/8/2018), Indonesian contingents have collected 4 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals. The sports which could grab the gold medals are those that have been predicted before exceptfor women's 48 kg weightlifting which only got silver. Besides that, cycling which was not targeted to grab gold by the government has succefully got2 gold medal. On Sunday, Indonesia obtained one gold in women's individual poomsae Taekwondo, by Defia Rosmaniar.

On Monday, Indonesia collected three gold medals from wushu by Lindswell Kwok and cycle downhill by Khoiful Mukhib and Tiara Andini Prastika. Silvers were submitted by Sri Wahyuni Agustiani from women's 48kg weightlifting. Meanwhile, two bronzes were given by Surahmat in men's 56kg weighlifting and Nining Porwaningsih in downhill. The efforts of those athletes in seizing the medals were not only about defeating the opponents, but also defeating their own selves. They had postponed their interests and even bore pain, for the sake of achievement.

Meanwhile, Republika wrote "Indonesia Plays Better."

Some Indonesian athletes made achievements in the Asian Games 2018. Indonesia added three medals from wushu and downhill on Monday. Gold in wushu was obtained by Indonesian main athlete, Lindswell Kwok who played in taijiquan and taijijian. She gained 9.75 points in taijiquan on Sunday morning, and another 9.75 in taijijian yesterday.

We end the Headlines with Tempo on "Aftershock Predicted Goes to Northeast of Lombok."

Aftershocks are predicted to keep happening in West Nusa Tenggara in the next two days. People in Lombok Island and Sumbawa Island were asked to anticipate further disaster in the form of landslide and collapsing building. Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency Head Dwikorita Karnawati said, earthquake may continue due to the previous fault is trying to stabilize. Dwikorita Karnawati yesterday said, aftershocks will head to northeast, since it is in different cluster.

President Joko Widodo on his state address before the House of the Representatives –DPR on last Thursday (16^thof August 2018) called for all levels of society to be grateful for having Pancasila as the source of ideology of Indonesian nation. As quoted by presidenri.go.id, President Joko Widodo said that Pancasila guides all Indonesian generations to implement the promises of Indonesia’s independence. Pancasila is the navigator, the generator, the source of inspiration, as well as the unifier of Indonesian nation with the principle of Unity in Diversity (Bhineka Tunggal Ika). President Joko Widodo believed by firmly sticking to Pancasila’s values, Indonesia will become a sovereign and dignified nation in the global network with other nations, meaning being equal to each other in every aspect of life.

Meanwhile, as quoted by Tribunews.com, when welcoming officials of the Agency for Pancasila Ideology Education (BPIP) at the office of DPR Speaker last Tuesday (14th of August 2018), Speaker Bambang Soesatyo called for all levels of society to practice Pancasila’s spirit and values first in every aspect of life. Making Pancasila’s spirit and values as the utmost importance is aimed at strengthening the sense of nationalism. He also remarked that Pancasila is the power of Indonesian nation. Because in the past, Indonesian ancestors implemented Pancasila’s values. The implementation of Pancasila’s values made Indonesian nation still exist until present. He added that Pancasila should be continuously implanted and applied in every aspect of state and nation life.

As quoted by tribunenews.com, when becoming the interviewee at the National Talkshow and Book Launching entitled “Membaca Indonesia di Jakarta” or “Reading Indonesia through Jakarta” on Monday (13^th of August 2018), Speaker Bambang Soesatyo said that Pancasila is philosophically the supporter of Indonesia being an immense house of society from various ethnicities and culture. Observing Indonesia today basically means figuring out the way to spread Pancasila’s values enormously into public by utilizing virtual world and creative media. Indonesian nation should preserve and maintain Pancasila as the bond to prevent the wave of political identity that keeps bothering the sense of nationalism. He is optimistic that Indonesian people must have missed the peace of life. Moreover, as a nation, Indonesia has a strong socio-historical root. For example, the Youth Pledge in 28^th of October, 1928, becomes the point of initiation for youths in the country’s revolution declaring the sons and daughters of Indonesia to acknowledge one motherland and one nation namely Indonesia, and respect the language of unity, namely Indonesian.
