British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste Owen Jenkins -

Indonesians are set to benefit from a new visa launched on 30 May to encourage talented individuals to move to the UK in the early stages of their career.

The UK already gives all graduates from courses one-year or longer at UK Universities the right to live and work in the UK for 2 or 3 years after graduation, through the post-study work visa scheme.

Now the UK is open to all graduates who have studied at one of the world’s top 50 non-UK Universities in the last 5 years, including Indonesians.

The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa gives permission to stay in the UK for at least 2 years, or 3 years if the person has a PhD or Doctoral qualification. With a High Potential Individual visa, it is possible to work, look for work, be self-employed, do voluntary work, bring your partner and children with you, and travel abroad and return to the UK. No job is needed to apply for the visa – people can look for a job once in the UK.

According to a release receive by Voice of Indonesia on Tuesday (07/06/22), to apply, you must have been awarded a qualification by an eligible non-UK top 50 university in the last 5 years. The Rankings used to decide the Top 50 are The Times Education World University Rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities. The University must have placed in the top 50 of at least two of the three rankings for the year in which the applicant received the qualification to qualify.

UK Universities are excluded, as UK graduates can already stay on in the UK through the post-study work visa scheme. Universities from the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and China are on the rest-of-the-world’s top 50 list.

The route gives a path for people to apply to stay in the UK permanently, if they so wish as after the 2 or 3 years, individuals can switch to a different visa, for example a Skilled Worker visa. From there, there is a route to staying permanently in the UK.

“Every Indonesian that starts their career in the UK will help us build greater trade and investment between our nations – by acting as a bridge between UK and Indonesia. I am delighted the UK has just made it easier for Indonesian top talent to move to the UK and start their careers there. I look forward to hearing more success stories from Indonesians starting businesses in the UK selling Indonesian goods, or empowering UK businesses to invest in Indonesia through knowledge of the market here.” British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Owen Jenkins said//VOI
