The issue of economic recovery and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets became part of the message of the 8th G20 (P20) Parliamentary Summit. The Eighth G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) will take place from 6-7 October in Jakarta.
The P20 confirmed that before the pandemic, the world was already off the track of achieving the SDGs target of 2030. To that end, they urged all countries to strengthen SDGs investments so that they can get back on track.
The message appears in the "Leader Summary" or Chair Summary as a result of the summit. Altogether there are two main sections with 25 messages related to a number of global issues.
"We believe that multilateralism is the most effective route to address common challenges, whether climate change, conflict, pandemics, transnational crime, terrorism, global economic imbalances, or threats to the environment," said Chair Summary P20, Friday (7/10/2022).
"Parliament must redouble their efforts in mobilizing resources to keep the SDGs on track," the P20 statement said.
Vaccination equality across countries is also part of the message being echoed, especially the Covid-19 vaccine. In its message, the P20 supports the option to release the WTO's five-year patent related to the production and supply of Covid-19 vaccines.
"We encourage the G20 to step up the fight against climate change and meet the Paris Agreement targets on global warming. Also act across mitigation, adaptation, and finance, while respecting shared responsibilities." Still from the P20 statement.
"G20 parliaments must lead by example by going greener and reducing their own carbon footprint," they said.
The P20 also supports developing countries in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and related crises. P20 emphasizes that these ways need to involve low-carbon, climate-resilient, and positive action towards nature.
The P20 supports these efforts without exacerbating developing country debt.
"We urge developed countries to immediately meet the USD 100 billion target, and to meet other commitments related to technology transfer and climate finance," the statement said.
"We remember that one of the goals of the Paris Agreement is to make financial flows consistent with a path towards low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate resilient development," the P20 statement said.
The P20 message closed with a thank you to the Indonesian Parliament as the host of the Eighth G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit. Thanks also go to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The next G20 Parliamentary Summit will take place in India in 2023. (RRI)
