VOINews, Jakarta - A total of 10,265 inmates at correctional prisons and detention centers in Jakarta received remissions on the 78th anniversary of Indonesian independence, a government official said.

"Some 10,265 of the 15,816 inmates in correctional prisons and detention centers in Jakarta received general remission in 2023," Head of the Jakarta Regional Office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Ibnu Chuldun informed here on Thursday.

According to him, of the 10,265 inmates who received remission, 9,792 people were granted general remission I, or a partial reduction of their sentence, and 473 people were granted general remission II, or were freed immediately.

At the Jakarta Narcotics Prison Class IIA in Cipinang, East Jakarta, he explained that the number of prisoners who were granted remissions was lower than the proposed number.

"We proposed 10,322 inmates and juvenile inmates, but only 10,265 people, or about 98 percent got approved (for remission)," Chuldun said.

The granting of this year's general remission not only reflects the government's steps to provide a second chance to prisoners, but also shows that the state emphasizes a holistic approach to the criminal justice system, he added.

"The granting of general remissions is a milestone in the journey toward a more just and humane justice system and is to convey that rehabilitation and reintegration are important to the goals of correctional services," he said.

The granting of remission is not solely given voluntarily by the government, but a form of appreciation for inmates who participated in the correctional program earnestly.

Chuldun said he expects that this will motivate inmates to always behave well and comply with the applicable laws. (Antaranews)
