ASEAN and Japan Agree on a Common Vision, Prioritize Economic Cooperation

VOINews.id: ASEAN and Japan have agreed on several shared visions and future partnership implementation plans. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said that in a joint statement at a summit commemorating 50 years of ASEAN-Japan friendship and cooperation on Sunday (17/12/2023).

"As partners for peace and stability, ASEAN and Japan continue to be committed to maintaining regional peace and stability, through inclusive collaboration, respect for the rules of international law, and strengthening ASEAN centrality," he said.

 

President Joko Widodo believes that the ASEAN and Japan partnership can continue to maintain stability and peace, bring people closer together, and drive economic growth in the region and the world. The President added that ASEAN and Japan also agreed to increase cooperation in education, research development, and the digital economy.

 

Meanwhile, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi forwarded President Joko Widodo's statement that future ASEAN-Japan economic cooperation must prioritize strengthening food and energy security. Future cooperation, according to the president, should also accelerate digital transformation.

 

"The president said that future ASEAN-Japan economic cooperation must prioritize two things. First, strengthening food and energy security through cooperation in agricultural and food technology and investment in technology transfer to accelerate the energy transition. Second, accelerating digital transformation for upskilling and reskilling human resources, as well as integrating small businesses into the digital ecosystem, where the ASEAN-Japan Center can support these efforts," she said in her press statement received in Jakarta on the same day.


Retno also said that President Joko Widodo hopes that Japan will encourage the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) through the formation of the RCEP Support Unit in Jakarta. It was also stated that the ASEAN–Japan Summit produced two documents. The first document is the Joint Vision Statement, a long-term vision for ASEAN-Japan relations. The second document is the Plan of the Joint Vision, containing 130 partnerships in the Joint Vision Statement.
