Australian fashion designers participated in the Emerging Designers Bootcamp in Yogyakarta 11-25 August 2024. As part of the 75th Anniversary of Australia-Indonesia Diplomatic Relations, the initiative was led by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in collaboration with the Australian Embassy, the Victorian Government, and the Yogyakarta Provincial Government.

Australian designers Josh Dean, Nikki Edgar, and Zhao Canwen delved into the art of batik, learning about this culturally important textile from batik artisans in Yogyakarta. The three made their debut on the Indonesian fashion runway at Jogja Fashion Week on 22 August, showcasing their collections incorporating locally made batik, during their two-week residency.

Director General of Information and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Siti Mauludiah and Acting Deputy Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Madeleine Moss wore their creations on the runway.

Australian Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia Gita Kamath said the program celebrated diversity, creativity and highlighted the strong relationship between the creative communities of both countries.

According to her, fashion is one of the world’s largest industries. The unique cultural exchange between Australian designers and Indonesian designers in Yogyakarta will encourage future collaborations in this important sector.

Josh Dean is an emerging indigenous artist, famous for his vibrant artworks. Nikki Edgar is known for her ready-to-wear and custom pieces with a performative style. Then, Zhao Canwen for her stunning work in film costumes and illustration.

Australian expert Dr Tassia Joannides, Interim Associate Dean of Fashion and Textile Design from RMIT University will also share her expertise on entering the Australian fashion market in a business talk on 23 August as part of Jogja Fashion Week (JFW).

Representing the Governor, Regional Secretary of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Beny Suharsono when opening the 2024 JFW event said that the collaboration between Yogyakarta and Australia is expected to be a momentum to strengthen the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering harmony, understanding, and a sense of friendship between the two countries. By being involved in this exchange and collaboration program, the two countries will share values and aspirations that benefit both countries.

Beny said that Jogja Fashion Week is not just a fashion exhibition, but also a platform that brings together various ideas and creativity without limits.
