VOInews, Jakarta : The Australian Embassy in Jakarta hosted the Australia Indonesia Legal Update Conference, organised by the University of Indonesia, in partnership with Monash University and six leading Indonesian law schools.

This prestigious event gathered more than 100 distinguished legal experts, practitioners, business representatives and policy makers to explore topical legal developments impacting both countries. Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Penitentiary Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, provided the keynote speech, and Vice Minister of Law, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, also spoke at the conference.

According to a release received by Voice of Indonesia in Jakarta on Thursday (14/11/24), the conference aims to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration between Australia and Indonesia, with sessions focused on topics such as criminal justice reforms, trade and investment and energy transition.

“This significant conference showcases the strong partnership between Indonesian and Australian education institutions in the legal sector,” said Gita Kamath, Australian Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia. “This partnership is underpinned by strong and enduring institutional links, and close connections between our people.”

For over a decade, Australia has been supporting Indonesia’s legal and justice reform initiatives by fostering government-to-government cooperation, sharing technical expertise and working together to strengthen public institutions.

In 2023 Monash University established partnerships with several leading Indonesian universities (UI, UNPAD, UGM, UNHAS, UNSRAT, UNAIR, UPH) through the Monash University Law Indonesia Alliance (MULIA). This partnership aims to advance collaboration among the member institutions//VOI
