Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) received the original certificate which sets the colonial era’s Ombilin coal mining in Sawahlunto, West Sumatera as the world heritage from the UNESCO in Jakarta on Monday (16/9). The certificate was handed over by the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry to Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) witnessed by the UNESCO Representatives to Indonesia.
“This is the hard working from all parties, it has been started since 2015 when the first time Indonesia registered it through several phases. After that, the process was so long and it’s hard because to get the world heritage status is really difficult in the process of registration, examination and it involved some experts for 4 years until it is determined,” said Hilman Farid.
Moreover, Hilmar explained the next phase is to establish the management and invites five regencies, cities in West Sumatera as well as PT Bukit Asam. The uniqueness of Ombilin coal mining in Sawahlunto is the exchanges of science and technology of Minangkabau with the European technology related to coal exploitation at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century in the world, especially in Southeast Asia.
