Some 2,000 scout members joined a carnival of recycled costumes in Jakarta's MH Thamrin street during car-free day on Sunday. They are members of the Bakti Camp Unit for Scouting Works by Saka Kalpataru, Saka Wanabakti (Pertikawan) and the National Movement for Watershed Conservation (GNPDAS) Jakarta Pertikawan Festival. "The cultural carnival with costumes made from waste, take on the theme of biodiversity (flora and fauna). This is the first time it was held. It is in line with President Joko Widodo's mandate," said Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Bambang Hendroyono, in a press statement received in Jakarta, Sunday. He said that the carnival is an innovative movement to motivate young scout members to care more about the environment and the sustainability of watersheds. He hoped for the young members to become pioneers in activities for the environment in their quarters. Deputy Chairperson of the National Quarter Scout Movement Kingkin Suroso said Saka Wanabakti and Saka Kalpataru are forums for fostering enforcement and Pandega scouts who had an interest in science and technology, as well as entrepreneurship in the utilization and preservation of natural resources in forestry and the environment. "This Pertikawan activity is a vehicle for applying and providing skills for members of Saka Wanabakti and Saka Kalpataru," he said. 200 participants wore costumes from recycled materials that were artistically designed to represent Indonesia's cultural richness and biodiversity in the carnival. A number of figures from the young generation also wore festival costumes made from recycled materials, including a diver who was also one of the 100 most influential women in the world, according to the BBC, Swietenia Puspa Lestari, Miss Cultural Indonesia 2019 Sonia Fergina Citra, and Binus Ambassador 2019 Reymond Leopard. The participants started the carnival in front of the Election Supervisory Body building (Bawaslu) and ended at the National Monument (Monas) field. The event was themed "Tailoring the Archipelago with Recycled Materials" and was held by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, in collaboration with the National Quarter of the Scout Movement.//antara

Transport Minister to Anticipate Christmas Surge

 Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi stated he has intensified coordination and divided roles with related stakeholders in anticipating the spike in the number of vehicles and passengers of public transportation during the 2019 Christmas and 2020 New Years holiday season. "We have gathered all stakeholders and divided our roles. The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing will prepare the roads, the Police force prepares their own team and we will do our part as well. Insya Allah (God willing), this will go on smoothly," said the Minister in his statement received In Jakarta, Monday. The Minister said that the Police Force's Traffic unit will coordinate down on the streets, much like the Eid holiday season. He predicted that during the Christmas and New Year period, the spike of vehicle numbers would not be as significant as the Eid holidays, and that the crowd would be more concentrated in tourism destination areas. "The prediction is that during the New Year holidays, it would not be as packed as Eid, so usually there would be a lot of people in tourist attractions. People would want to go to Bali, Jogja, more than those returning home. So we have taken certain measures in some places to ensure security," he said. In addition, he also said there will be appropriation of passenger ship fees around 10-15 percent. "Theoretically, the increase should have been at 50 percent, but the government is doing it gradually. We stay at 10-15 percent in order to help them (operators) maintain good services," he said. The state ideology Pancasila is non-negotiable for Indonesia so that the entire nation must have a common spirit of opposing radicalism and terrorism which potentially distruct the national unity, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani said.

"Pancasila is cultivated by the nation's leaders who come from different backgrounds. We need to reach a common agreement to enable this nation to keep standing solidly because it is a multiethnic, multiracial, and multicultural one," he said.

As revealed in his press statement that made available to ANTARA in Jakarta on Sunday, Ahmad Muzani said the nation's leaders, including religious figures, have agreed that Pancasila is the foundation for the nation and state's deliberation.

Indonesia is very lucky to have Pancasila because, as the state's ideology, it has contributed to its solid existence and made the entire people from socio-cultural and racial backgrounds to remain united within the Unitary State of Indonesia, he said.

He conveyed his perspectives on Pancasila when speaking at Indonesia's 2019 Islamic Young Leaders Summit at the Parliament Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Saturday.

As the state ideology, Pancasila must be un-negotiable and be rooted in the hearts and minds of every citizen, he added.

In his second leadership term, President Joko Widodo has repeatedly highligted the real threats of proliferated radicalism and terrorism.

In addressing this problem, the government and related stakeholders intensify deradicalization efforts.

Commenting on how to deal with radicalism, Head of the Jenderal Soedirman University's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Luthfi Makhasin recently said deradicalization efforts in Indonesia could not come just from law enforcement agencies.

Instead, the attempts to deradicalize targeted members of communities should also engage other related stakeholders. "The deradicalization efforts cannot just be made by security personnel alone," he said.

An appropriate understanding of the subject is imperative for people who are involved in the efforts to negate religious radicalism and deradicalization and make it a success, he said. (ANTARA)

President of Indonesia Joko Widodo has ordered his ministries to trim firearm imports and instead strengthen the local weaponry defense system industry.  

"First, I would like to mention that the country's roadmap on the weaponry industry must prioritize the state-owned companies and domestic private sector. As a result, we can be less dependent on weapon imports," President Widodo remarked at a meeting with ministers at the president's office in Jakarta, Friday.

The ministries must ensure that each firearm import deal will include the tech-transfer as well as cooperation between Indonesia and the foreign countries involved, he stated. With the orders he has issued, the President hoped the quality of capital resources of the domestic weapons industries could be enhanced.

Apart from highlighting the importance of the domestic industry, the president also ordered ministries to keep up with the latest weaponry systems. "I don't expect us to still use the old, conventional firearms as it will not be suitable against future threats," he added.

Last month the Minister of Defense, Military Lt. Gen. (retired) Prabowo Subianto vowed to strengthen the country's weapons defense system during a visit to the National Military Force's (TNI) HQ in Jakarta.

"The TNI must be strong in all branch of services, including the Army, Navy and Air Force. For this reason, together with the Vice Minister, we want to strengthen the operational ranks of the TNI's real combat force, and we will strengthen the TNI," Prabowo remarked.

Firearms imports of Indonesia in 2018 amounts to US$354 million, far higher than the country's weapon exports that reach $15 million, according to a research launched by World Bank. (ANTARA)
