UN Human Rights Commissioner Highlights Rakhine Humanitarian Crisis at the Jakarta International Conversation on Human Rights

Human rights violations on Rohingya ethnic group in Rakhine, Myanmar are highlighted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN) at the Jakarta International Conversation on Human Rights held by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Monday 5/2). In his remarks, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra`ad al Hussein said genocide and ethnic cleansing are likely to have taken place in Rakhine, Myanmar. The statement is based on the direct testimony of the refugees.

"The atrocities recounted by the refugees, who constitute well over half the Rohingya living in northern Rakhine, include brutal killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, atrocious sexual violence, and destruction of homes and livelihoods. Although any definitive finding should be made by an appropriate tribunal, my Office considers that acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing may have occurred," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra`ad al Hussein said

Zeid Ra`ad al Hussein added that in addition to violating the Rohingya ethnicity in Rakhine, the Government of Myanmar also refused to grant citizenship, legal status and birth certificates to the Rohingya in Rakhine which has implications for the loss of their rights as citizens of Myanmar. According to him, this humanitarian crisis is very serious and impact on the security of Southeast Asia region. Therefore, he hopes the Government of Myanmar can solve this crisis by focusing on the socio-economic development plan in Rakhine. ///(VOI/REZHA/AHM)

President: Take advantage of the Great Potential of Sharia Economics

With huge market potential, Indonesia should be the main driver of sharia economy. It was conveyed by President Joko Widodo during a Plenary Meeting of the National Committee on Sharia Finance with ome cabinet ministers on Monday, 5 February 2018, at the Presidential Office of Jakarta.
 
"I want to emphasize that in the development of sharia economy, we should not only become the target market and industrial products of other countries just to become consumers," said President.
 
One of the potentials of Indonesia as a country with the largest Muslim population in the world is the asset of sharia banking that continues to increase. In 2017, Indonesia's sharia banking assets stood at Rp435 trillion, or about 5.8% of total banking assets of Indonesia.
"Therefore  we are very serious to work on this potential, and I see the numbers also show improvement," he said.
 
Similarly, the sharia capital market whose numbers continue to improve. In fact, Indonesia's sukuk market share reached 19% of all sukuk issued by various countries. Not only that, the total assets of sharia non-Islamic finance industry has also doubled in the last five years.
 
"We also have great potential for the collection of religious social funds, such as pilgrim funds, zakat funds, waqf funds, and infaq funds, and alms," said the President.
 
Furthermore, the President also mentioned other potentials that must be immediately worked out in the framework of developing sharia economy. Starting from the industrial field fashion, Muslim fashion, halal food, pharmacy, until the tourism sector.
 
In food industry for example, Indonesia has the highest level of halal food consumption in the world. Indonesia also entered the top five countries with consumption of medicinal products, kosal cosmetics, and the largest Muslim fashion in the world. While in the tourism economy, Indonesia ranks fourth with the most number of tourist visits from OIC members.
 
"The potential of this tourism sector is still very promising, with global tourism spending reaching USD169 billion or 11.8 percent of global tourism consumption spending," he said.
 
Nevertheless, the President appealed that the development of Islamic finance industry can provide tangible benefits, including supporting efforts to reduce poverty in order to reduce the number of inequality in the country.
 
"The data I received still shows that the use of sharia financing is 41.8%, mostly for consumption, while working capital and investment financing only reach 34.3% and 23.2%, respectively," said President.
 
The President also requested that by 2018 the Shariah LKM, micro-endowment banks, especially those located in pesantren-pesantren, are further expanded and expanded to cover all parts of Indonesia
 
At the end of his introduction, the President requested that reforms and improvements to the management of zakat and waqf continue to be done to support poverty alleviation programs  and suppress the number of inequities. (Release: Protocol, Press and Media Secretariat of the President)

The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) wants the targeted achievement of strategic planning in 2018 at the 100 first day program of tge Indonesian Military (TNI)  commander, Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto.  It was stated by the Indonesian Army Chief of Staff, General Mulyono to Media on the sidelines of Leaders Meeting of The Indonesian Army 2018 at the headquarter in Jakarta on Monday (05/02).  Mulyono said the targets achieved are like boards of organization, doctrine, personnel, capability development, material and the use of power for war and non war. However, related to the main weaponry system , TNI AD will focus on supporting facilities equipment.
 
"I complete it, I will not procure new main weaponry system, but only completing what we have bought.  I see that the new main weaponry system in 2018 and 2019 will come. What we have already purchased must be completed to be operated, " Mulyono said. 
 
General Mulyono explained the Indonesian Military continously pays attention to prioritized scale in procuring new weapon which is based on the budget,  so the Indonesian Military wants all the main weaponry system can be operated soon at the second strategic planning// (VOI/Ahmad Faisal/AHM)

IAEA Ready to Help Indonesia Developing Nuclear Power Plant

The International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed its readiness to provide assistance to Indonesia for the development of nuclear power plants (PLTN). However, related to the construction of the nuclear power plant, the agency insists it will not intervene and submit the decision completely to the Indonesian government. This was conveyed by the Director General of IAEA, Yukiya Amano, after meeting with Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs A.M Fachir in Jakarta, Monday, February 5th, 2018.
 
"And IAEA can assist if you decide, but it is up to you to decide and we will not interfere, in that decision. In a country decide either Indonesia or Bangladesh decide to use a nuclear power. We can help to use nuclear power safely, securely, and sustainably," Yukiya said. 
Yukiya added that the International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA) will support Indonesia completely because nuclear power is one of the most environmentally friendly electricity sources nowadays. Nuclear power has its advantages. Nuclear-generated electricity has the lowest carbon content. One-third of the low-carbon supply is generated from nuclear power today. The issue of nuclear power plant development in Indonesia has long been rolling. A number of countries have offered cooperation for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Indonesia. Based on a Sigma Research poll in 2015, 75 percent of Indonesians themselves supported the establishment of a nuclear power plant as it is assumed to ensure the availability of electricity supplies.//// (VOI/Rezha/AHM)
