I’ll end Today in history with July 17, 2000, Bashar al-Assad is sworn in as president of Syria.
Bashar al-Assad became president of Syria succeeding Hafez al-Assad who was none other than his own father who died on June 10, 2000 after 30 years in power. The rise of Bashar al-Assad to be President can not be separated from constitutional changes in Syria. Immediately after the death of Hafez al-Assad, the Syrian Parliament set a minimum age for the president no longer 40 years, but 34 years. This change allowed Hafez al-Assad's son, Bashar al-Assad, then aged 34, to be elected president so he ran for president without a competitor // Bashar al-Assad was formally inaugurated on 17 July 2000 for 7 years.
