Foreign Ministry Hopes PNG Gov't Clarifies Shooting of Indonesian Fishermen

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) hopes that the government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) will immediately clarify the events that are currently busy. The incident was the death of an Indonesian fisherman allegedly shot by the PNG Army.

The Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens and BHI at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha said, the Indonesian Ambassador to Papua New Guinea (PNG) continues to communicate with related parties. "We ask for a thorough investigation into this incident," he explained during a conversation with Pro 3 RRI, Thursday (25/8/2022).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also asked for strict law enforcement against PNG soldiers who violated procedures for the incident. In this case, the Indonesian Ambassador to PNG has sent a diplomatic note.

"The Indonesian Ambassador to PNG in Port Morresby has sent a diplomatic note. We encourage the PNG authorities to immediately respond to our diplomatic note with the various requests that we submit," he said.

Sugeng, an Indonesian fisherman, died on August 22, 2022 because he was allegedly shot by PNG soldiers. He is the captain of the fishing motor boat (Kmn) Calvin 02 from Merauke, Papua, which was reported to have entered PNG waters.

Based on initial information received on August 22. It was revealed that there were three fishing boats catching fish in Papua New Guinea waters.

Two of the ships were captured and one escaped. While trying to escape, the boat was shot and hit one of the fishermen named Sugeng.

"In this incident the position of the Calvin 02 ship was indeed in PNG waters and also fishing there," said Judha. (RRI)
