Indonesian Embassy Prepares Lawyers to Accompany Dozens of Merauke Fishermen

The Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby has prepared lawyers to accompany dozens of fishermen from Merauke, Papua, who were allegedly detained by the Papua New Guinea army. The incident is thought to have been caused by fishermen catching fish in the waters since last August 22.

“The Indonesian Embassy provides translation services for them. We are waiting for further investigations and providing legal assistance," said the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, while talking to Pro3 RRI, Thursday (8/9/2022).

Judha said the condition of the fishermen who were secured were in good health. A total of 13 fishermen from two fishing vessels were arrested while catching fish in the southern waters of Papua New Guinea.

"The Indonesian Embassy also provides logistical assistance. Help communicate with their families in Merauke," he said.

Two fishing boats, namely KM Arsyla 77 and KM Barakah Paris. The ship docks at Port Moresby Harbor and Indonesian representatives have helped provide communication access.

The 13 fishermen detained in Port Moresby are Sarif Casiman (32), Riki Heni Setiawan (38). Then there are Farid Sasole (32), Feli Puswaskor (22), Joni (46), Ceno Jelafui (28).

Then Rohman (43), Joni (51), Amin Nurul Mustofa (21), Nuriadi (42). And Beni Wasel (26), Fernando Tuwok (22), and Laode Darsan (40). (RRI)
