VOInews, Bantul: Indonesia's Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, accompanied by Deputy Minister Ni Luh Puspa, visited Wukirsari Tourism Village in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), as part of her working tour. The village recently received the prestigious Best Tourism Village award from UNWTO 2024, further solidifying Indonesia's reputation on the global tourism stage.

"We are immensely proud because this achievement reflects Indonesia's rich cultural heritage and serves as a global symbol of local wisdom-based tourism," Minister Widiyanti expressed. Wukirsari Village is widely recognised as one of Indonesia's finest tourism villages, excelling in developing sustainable edu-tourism and eco-tourism initiatives.

Since 2007, Wukirsari has focused on developing its creative economy, particularly in hand-drawn batik crafts, centred in Giriloyo Batik Village. Visitors can not only purchase high-quality batik products but also participate in batik-making workshops. "Learning to create batik is our way of introducing this UNESCO-recognised cultural heritage, which has been part of our tradition since 1634," shared a local artisan. Over 600 batik craftsmen are actively involved, benefiting directly from the enhanced livelihoods brought about by this unique attraction.

Beyond its renowned crafts, Wukirsari Village is blessed with diverse geographical features, including hills, rivers, forests, and agricultural land, creating a picturesque and serene environment for visitors. Its commitment to sustainable community-based management has earned the village numerous accolades, such as the ASEAN Homestay Award (2016), the title of Advanced Tourism Village Champion (2023), and Sustainable Tourism Village certification (2022).

Minister Widiyanti emphasised that these accomplishments are the result of collaborative efforts involving regional governments, tourism village managers, small businesses, and local communities. "Looking ahead, we hope Wukirsari Village continues to innovate without losing its traditional roots, creating globally competitive tourism products rooted in sustainability," she stated.

Accompanying the Minister on this visit were key officials, including Fadjar Hutomo, the Minister’s Senior Adviser on Crisis Management; Hariyanto, Deputy for Destination and Infrastructure Development; and Agustin Peranginangin, CEO of the Borobudur Authority. Their presence underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the growth of community-based tourism in Indonesia.
