PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked the newly-launched tourism and supporting sectors state-owned holding to be agile and professional in running its business to make its governance more efficient and simple.

"Do not let new complications arise or transform old problems into new ones," he advised while launching InJourney, the state-owned tourism and supporting sectors holding, at Kuta Mandalika Beach, Central Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, on Thursday.

The key to advancement is improving management and governance to optimize Indonesia's huge tourism potential, he said.

"Earlier, as stated by the State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister, the potential of domestic tourists could reach 330 million trips. Do not let the huge potential slip away," he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the potential of foreign travelers is only 17 million trips, he pointed out.

However, international travelers are also important actors for Indonesia’s tourism, he noted.

In 2022, Indonesia has the potential to increase the number of visits since it is set to host various international events, including the Mandalika MotoGP in March 2022 and the G20 Summit in November 2022, he said.

The events will attract the attention of the international community to Indonesia, he added.

Hence, the momentum must be utilized as well as possible, especially by the tourism sector -- for instance, by preparing ten super-priority tourism destinations in Indonesia, the President said.

Furthermore, President Jokowi asked the holding to develop the tourism sector for the benefit of the local community, including local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“The holding must expand business and improve governance. In addition, it has to involve the surrounding community and establish a cross-sectoral ecosystem, which involves SOEs, the private sector, as well as local communities and MSMEs soon," he stressed.

In addition, it is important for the holding to provide space and opportunity for the community to participate in improving the tourism sector in the region and advancing Indonesia, he said.  (Antaranews)

Indonesia will fight for the interests of island countries during its G20 Presidency, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahendra Siregar, said in a statement released here on Thursday.

For the first time in history, the G20 Presidency has decided to invite small archipelagic countries, represented by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), he informed.

"We want the G20 to be relevant not just for member countries, but also for the whole world," he said during a virtual discussion between Indonesia and Jamaica on climate change.

By including small archipelagic nations, it is expected that inclusive recovery can immediately be realized, which aligns with Indonesia's G20 Presidency theme, "Recover Together, Recover Stronger", he added.

Indonesia has also made the issue of energy transition a priority for its G20 Presidency, Siregar noted.

The discussion on the transition to green energy is very important and mirrors the perspective that Indonesia, as both a developing nation and an archipelagic country, is affected by climate change, he observed.

As a developing nation, Indonesia has a vested interest in placing the issue of climate change within the framework of sustainable development, he said.

"Indonesia is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. To this end, it is focusing on adaptation and mitigation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of hydrometeorological disasters," he affirmed.

As President Joko Widodo said in Glasgow in 2021, Indonesia is aiming to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent under the business-as-usual category by 2030, he noted.

It is also seeking an additional 41-percent reduction with the support of the international community, he said.

Indonesia has also delivered its long-term strategy and climate resilience plan that aims for net-zero emissions by 2060, he added. (Antaranews)

The humanitarian aid dispatched by the Indonesian government for the Afghan people recently must not be considered an acknowledgment of the Taliban government, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has emphasized.

In a press briefing here on Thursday, director general of information and public diplomacy at the ministry, Teuku Faizasyah, stressed that the shipment of the aid on January 9, 2022, was a form of humanitarian assistance.

The attempt was also aimed at protecting Indonesian citizens working for various United Nations (UN) agencies who have returned to work in Afghanistan, he said.

“We would like to reaffirm that until now, no country has recognized Taliban’s governance in Afghanistan. However, almost all countries have engaged with the group, including the United States and the European Union," the director general noted.

Hence, it is important to distinguish between facilitating humanitarian aid and essential matters and recognition of the Taliban’s occupation of Afghanistan, he stressed.

Currently, the ministry is still monitoring the distribution of the assistance, which is being carried out by the UN’s World Food Program (WFP), he informed.

Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi had dispatched two planes carrying the aid from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang city, Banten province in the wee hours of January 9, 2022.

The aircrafts (GA-7900 and GA-7700) landed at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul, Afghanistan eight hours later.

According to Marsudi, the humanitarian assistance was a response to the alarming humanitarian situation in the South Asian country, where some 23 million people are facing the threat of starvation and over three million children are facing the threat of malnutrition.

The safety and well-being of the Afghan people have always been Indonesia's priority, Marsudi remarked adding, she hoped that the assistance would ease the current burden on the community.  (Antaranews)

Adequate energy storage is necessary to prevent an energy crisis as the one that Europe is currently experiencing, president commissioner of state-run PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN), Arcandra Tahar, has said.

Europe still relies on intermittent renewable energy, derived primarily from wind and sunlight, he explained during the online PGN Energy and Economic Outlook 2022 on Wednesday.

"If we look at the data, energy mix renewable in Europe is only 14 percent, 15 percent is nuclear and the rest is fossil fuel," he highlighted.

The primary problem is that wind and solar are sources that can only produce energy when they appear, he said. This means that if there is no sun, then there is no energy, he observed. This also applies to wind, he added.

"Which is why storage or battery technology is required so that when it dies off, the technology could replace the missing energy," he explained.

Moreover, post-pandemic recovery has increased the need for energy, he said. The expected renewable energy would not be able to produce enough energy to fulfill this need, he added.

Considering this condition, coal-fired power plants, which have been retired since 2020, have to be revived, he said. Thus, gas supply from Russia to West Europe is expected to flow once more, he pointed out.

This condition is the opposite of Europe's commitment to realizing net-zero emissions faster, he said.

"If they want to revive coal, this would disrupt their net-zero target," Tahar affirmed.

This situation should serve as a valuable lesson for Indonesia, which has also committed to realizing net-zero emissions by 2050–2060 or faster, he opined.

Indonesia should utilize its local feature to meet cleaner energy requirements in the future, he said. One of the sources of energy that should be considered is geothermal, he added.

"Geothermal could function like coal, which could produce energy all the time. It does not depend on the sun nor the wind," he informed.

However, the cost for setting up a geothermal power plant is higher compared to coal, he noted.

"But in terms of greenness, it is a sustainable supply. Hence, one of the options is to develop geothermal (power)," he said.  (Antaranews)

Indonesia's ability to produce electric vehicle batteries (EVB) can prove a game changer for its status in the global industry, Chief of Presidential Staff, Moeldoko, has said.

"We must be able to play an important role and regulate, (considering the country's) abundant nickel (resources). A great opportunity that can change the game is in front of our eyes, and that is called the electric motor battery," he said at the Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) here on Wednesday.

He further said he is optimistic that the domestic production of electric car batteries would upgrade the country's economic competency, technological skills, and energy independence.

If Indonesia can create an electric vehicle ecosystem that is supported by regulations, infrastructure, and natural resources, many large investments will come from the upstream to downstream sectors, he elaborated.

"The growth of the large-scale industry of electric vehicle battery is inevitable in Indonesia," he added.

Therefore, for realizing its ambitions regarding the electric vehicle industry, quality batteries produced in the country must enter the global market, he said. This also requires building people's demand for electric vehicles, he added.

"This is the right momentum to socialize electric vehicles to the public. When the time comes, the link-up between demand and production will come to exist. It is a matter of time," Moeldoko, who is also the chairman of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo), stated.

He also recalled President Joko Widodo's commitment to accelerating the battery-based electric motor vehicles industry, which aligns with Indonesia's target to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 by eliminating the use of fossil fuel in vehicles.

The Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) will be held fromMay 12 to May 22, 2022at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. It aims to serve as a platform for electric vehicle industry players, the creative industry, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to showcase their products.  (Antaranews)

Meanwhile, for 2022, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is targeting an investment of US$32.6 billion, with the target for oil and gas pegged at US$17 billion, electricity US$7.6 billion, mineral and coal US$5 billion, and renewable energy US$3 billion, he added.

Non-tax state revenue (PNPB) realization from the energy and mineral resources sector reached Rp189.2 trillion in 2021, he informed earlier.

"The realization recorded 156 percent of the initial target of Rp121.2 trillion," he remarked.

Compared to PNPB realization in 2020, which reached Rp109 trillion, the revenue in 2021 showed an increase of around 73.6 percent, the minister noted.

The ministry has continued to push PNBP up through a number of attempts, including oil and gas lifting as well as supervision of mineral, coal, and geothermal production, he said.

In 2021, the oil and gas sub-sector had the largest PNBP contribution of Rp103.2 billion, followed by the mineral and coal sub-sector (Rp75.5 billion), he informed.  (Antaranews)
