The city of Surakarta or Solo, Central Java, hosts the international chess tournament JAPFA Grand Master (GM) and Woman Grand Master Chess (WGM) 2018 on 25 April to 1 May.

"This is the first international chess tournament in Solo since Ibu Tien Cup in 1982," said General Chairman of the All Indonesia Chess Entity Association (PB Percasi) GM Utut Adianto at the press conference of the chess tournament in Jakarta on Monday, April 23, 2018 . For the tournament in Surakarta which is also known by the name of the city of Solo, Utut said, only the outstanding achievers are included to encourage national chess players.
