PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

The Industry Ministry would optimize machinery restructurization in small and medium-scale furniture industry to improve productivity as well as quality and expand its export market.

Export of furniture products has recorded a 30.8 percent increase during January to August 2021, compared to the export in the same period of 2020.

"This has shown that our furniture products can compete in global market. Moreover, our products are unique and innovative, thanks to various breakthroughs by industry operators in order to improve competitiveness," the ministry's acting Director General of Small and Medium Scale Industry Reni Yanita said in a statement here on Sunday.

Under the restructurization program, the ministry would provide discount price that could be reimbursed to SMEs bought machinery during a certain period.

The ministry would provide 25 percent discount for imported machine and 40 percent discount for locally-made machine.

"All SMEs could take part in this program, referring to the Industry Ministry Regulation. The program is expected to encourage the development of production technology," she said.

Indonesia's furniture export has recorded a positive growth amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Export in 2020 has increased by 12.2 percent to US$2.19 billion compared to export in the previous year.

Among the main destination countries for Indonesian furniture export are the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The ministry has also helped SMEs in the sector to hold partnership with large-scale industry as part of efforts to build supply chain ecosystem, hence it would improve efficiency in production process.

"To improve small-scale industry capability in fulfilling large-scale industry's specification, we have trained small industries to increase their products' quality," she said. (antaranews)

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stressed the government's commitment to carrying out an economic transformation toward a circular economy.

"The concept is not only about waste management but is also about production process with reusable raw material. Hence, this will be a significant saving of natural resources," Hartarto said in a statement here on Sunday.

The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible.

This model will reduce consumption of primary natural resources and waste production.

Hartarto said the transformation toward circular economy is important for Indonesia, as it will bring positive impacts to environment as well as growth in many other sectors in future.

The circular economy, he elaborated, would increase Indonesia's Gross Economic Product (GDP) and, at the same time, create jobs for 4.4 million people.

The implementation of the concept of circular economy would also give contribution to the achievement of Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

"We are committed to reducing green house gas emission by 29 percent in 2030. With international cooperation, it can be increased to 41 percent," he said.

The low carbon development concept has been stipulated in the 2020-2024 medium-term national development planning and the road map of Indonesia's NDC achievement in 2030.

Five priority sectors, included in the two documents, comprise sustainable energy development, integrated waste management, green industry development, sustainable land restoration, as well as inventory and rehabilitation of coastal and sea ecosystem.

Regarding to the implementation of green industry, 895 companies have received the green industry awards during 2010 to 2019.

As many as 1,707 industries received blue and gold predicates in the Program for Rating Company Performance in Environmental Management (PROPER).

The minister admitted some challenges that might hinder the economic transformation, such as access to financial as well as technology to develop the green technology.

"It would need some Rp308 trillion or some US$21.6 billion per year to invest in circular economy," he said. (Antaranews)

The US government is committed to donating an additional 800 thousand doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to Indonesia through the global COVAX mechanism.

"There is a new commitment to add 800 thousand doses of vaccine through the COVAX facility that will arrive in Indonesia in the near future," Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi stated while delivering a virtual press statement regarding her activities in New York, Saturday.

The vaccine donation will result in the addition of 12,665,060 doses of vaccine that Indonesia had earlier received from the US.

US President Joe Biden had announced at the virtual COVID-19 Global Summit on September 22 that the US will donate an additional 500 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

The donations will be sent to low- and middle-income nations worldwide from January 2022.

The commitment brings the total number of vaccines donated by the US to over 1.1 billion doses.

The US has shipped free-of-charge 160 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to 100 countries, with millions of doses being dispatched on a daily basis.

At nearly all bilateral meetings with Indonesian partners, Minister Marsudi has discussed about COVID-19 handling.

"I told them that the positivity rate in Indonesia is currently below two percent on average or below the WHO standard of five percent. Earlier, Indonesia's positivity rate had reached 31 percent," she remarked while referring to the World Health Organization.

In particular, Marsudi urged several countries that still included Indonesia on the COVID-19 red list to reconsider the status given.

"One example, France has removed Indonesia from the red list," she noted.

In addition, Indonesia expressed concern over the inequality, discrimination, and politicization of vaccines.

Indonesia agreed with its partners to narrow the vaccine gap and stop discrimination and politicization over vaccines.

During the last two days on Sept 23-24, Minister Marsudi held bilateral meetings with 18 partners, including the high commissioner of UNHCR, secretary general of the Arab League, CEO of the US-ASEAN Business Council, secretary general of the United Nations, prime minister of the Netherlands, president of Palau, the UK foreign minister, and the US special representative for Afghanistan.

Marsudi also met with foreign ministers from Sri Lanka, Japan, Mozambique, Pakistan, Serbia, Iran, France, Mauritania, and Thailand//ANT

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will officially launch the opening ceremony of the PON XX National Games at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura district on October 2, 2021, Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali has confirmed.

"The National Games committee has coordinated with the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI), the Youth and Sports Ministry, and other relevant parties to ensure President Jokowi's attendance to officially open the PON Games," Amali said at a virtual press conference originating from Jakarta on Friday.

Strict health protocols would be implemented throughout the opening ceremony, particularly during the athletes' defile and athletes' oath, he added.

He said the athletes' defile would not be as lively as in the previous games due to physical distancing and COVID-19 prevention measures.

Regarding spectator attendance, the committee has set maximum attendance at the match venues at 25 percent of the total venue capacity, with the percentage including the athletes and other officials, the minister informed.

Only fully vaccinated spectators will be allowed to enter match venues, he confirmed.

"We have also conceived detailed health protocol arrangements specifically for popular sports such as football, volley, basketballs, and badminton that may attract wide public interest to attend the match. We will manage the public spectators so the maximum capacity would not be exceeded," Amali said.

In view of the public interest in the PON XX National Games, the committee earlier hoped to open match venues to public spectators, but the low vaccine coverage in the four Papuan host regions forced the committee to reconsider the plan and set restrictions on spectator attendance in place, he added.

The PON XX National Games are scheduled to take place from October 2-15, 2021, and the XVI National Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held from November 2-15, 2021. The PON will be hosted by Jayapura city, and Jayapura, Mimika, and Merauke districts//ANT

The acting director general of Hajj and Umrah at the Indonesian Religion Affairs Ministry has lobbied the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Indonesia to allow prospective Indonesian pilgrims to undertake Umrah soon.

"We hope that the Saudi Arabian government will immediately end the suspension of the implementation of Umrah for prospective Indonesian pilgrims, thus they can have the opportunity to go to the Holy Land," acting director general of Hajj and Umrah, Khoirizi, said in a written statement received here on Thursday.

There has been no recent regulation from Saudi Arabia on the implementation of Umrah for foreign countries, he said. Suspended countries have to undergo strict health protocols if they want to continue to dispatch prospective pilgrims, he added.

During a meeting with Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Indonesia, Esham Altsaqafi, Khorizi informed him that the handling of COVID-19 in Indonesia has continued to improve.

In addition, he said that prospective Indonesian pilgrims are prepared to follow the health protocols promulgated by the Saudi Arabian government to undertake Umrah.

"There are five countries which send the most Umrah pilgrims but have not been able to send them – comprising Pakistan, Indonesia, India, Turkey, and Egypt. We hope that Indonesian Umrah pilgrims will be prioritized to be dispatched soon," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Altsaqafi emphasized that his government has never prohibited Indonesian Muslims from performing Umrah.

However, Umrah has been suspended in order to control the pandemic, he said.

Furthermore, the ambassador said he had apprised the Saudi Arabian government of the decline in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia, which would be considered when the government decides on issuing Umrah permits.

Although Umrah has been allowed since Muharram 1443 Hijri for certain countries, only 1,000-1,500 pilgrims have participated in it, he informed.

"The low participation is due to the strict procedures in the Umrah implementation to curb pandemic transmission," he added.(Antaranews)

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) virtually attended the Global COVID-19 Summit to discuss world leaders' commitment to expediting vaccination efforts worldwide, according to Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin.

During a virtual press conference broadcasted from the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel on Thursday morning, Minister Sadikin stated that President Jokowi had attended the Global COVID-19 Summit on Wednesday evening after accepting US President Joe Biden's personal invitation to attend the summit.

President Jokowi is among the only four world leaders to be personally invited by President Biden to attend the summit and provide suggestions on the COVID-19 pandemic handling strategy, according to Sadikin.

The minister noted that President Biden had laid emphasis on three key points for the COVID-19 handling strategy at the summit.

"The first point is to reiterate our commitment with world leaders to expedite vaccination rates worldwide," Sadikin revealed.

The minister noted that the World Health Organisation's current target was to achieve a 40-percent vaccination coverage for the global population in 2021 and 70-percent coverage in 2022.

The second point is the importance of quick decisions to save humanity from the disease, as currently, around 4.5 million people worldwide have succumbed to the virus, the minister noted.

"President Biden specifically emphasises the necessity to ensure the provision of oxygen, testing and tracing equipment, and medicines stocks in hospitals to treat patients infected by the virus," Minister Sadikin stated.

The minister explained that the third point pertained to ensuring global recovery from the pandemic and preparedness to face a future epidemic.

"We need to conceive a global health resilience architecture and plan a global healthcare financial system for a country needing financial assistance to address domestic health issues," the minister stated.

President Biden also highlighted the importance of a resilient healthcare system in developing and developed countries for a better future and ensuring preparedness to face a future epidemic, Sadikin affirmed. (Antaranews)

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights has said the Ministerial Regulation (Permenkumham) No. 34 of 2021 allowing foreign nationals to enter Indonesia has been through a number of evaluations.

"The regulation is not issued suddenly out of the way, but has undergone assessment from various parties including the COVID-19 Task Force," the ministry's head of public relations and general directorate of immigration, Arya Pradhana Anggakara, said here on Wednesday.

The Ministerial Regulation No. 34 of 2021 concerning the Visa Issuance and Residence Permits in the Period of Handling the Spread of COVID-19 and Recovering The National Economy was signed by the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly, he noted.

According to Anggakara, the issuance of the new ministerial regulation  which has replaced the previous one No. 27 of 2021) does not loosen the regulation on foreigners coming into the country.

The new regulation even has a new and strict requirement for foreigners who want to enter Indonesia, he pointed out.

"The regulation requires every foreigner who is entering Indonesia to show a vaccine certificate that proves they have obtained a full dose of the (COVID-19) vaccine," he said.

Every foreigner who wants to enter the country must submit a negative COVID-19 swab test result and have health insurance that will cover the treatment cost in case they fall sick, he added.

"So, in case they arrive in Indonesia and are exposed to COVID-19, they already have health insurance to pay for themselves in Indonesia," Anggakara said.

Furthermore, upon arrival in Indonesia, every foreigner must undergo quarantine and take a swab or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test to ensure that they are completely healthy and safe from COVID-19, he added.

Based on the regulation, foreigners who can get permission to enter Indonesia include those holding a Work Permit, Diplomatic Stay Permit, Temporary Stay Permit, Permanent Stay Permit, business travel card holders, conveyance crew and their conveyances, and traditional border crossers. (Antaranews)
