PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply

PLN Gradually Recovers Electricity Supply (0)

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has recovered electric power to Balaraja Extra High Voltage substation in Banten Province, and furthermore it will be channeled to Suralaya steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) to gradually recover its operation to reach its capacity of 2800 MW of electricity.

In addition, power supply from Gandul Extra High Voltage substations in Depok, West Java Province, will be channeled to Muara Karang gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) to supply electricity to the Indonesian capital city, Jakarta.

Acting President Director of PLN Sripeni Inten Cahyani said here on Sunday that the power supply to Jakarta was expected to recover within three hours.

"We apologize for the inconvenience today, and currently all efforts have been made to recover the Java-Bali power system, especially in the area of West Java, Banten, and Jakarta," Cahyani said.

The company has focused on power supply to PLTGU Muara Karang and PLTGU Priok to recover the system in the capital city.

Previously, PLN has recovered the operation of hydro-generated power plant (PLTA) Saguling and PLTA Cirata which are functioned as power stabilizer, and, at the same time, supply the electricity to PLTU Suralaya through Cibinong, Depok, Gandul, Lengkok, Balaraja and Suralaya extra high voltage substations.

PLTU Suralaya is expected to return to its normal operation within six hours to normalize power system in West Java and Banten.

Blackout that affected thousands of homes and public facilities in West Java, Jakarta, and Banten was caused by several troubles in the extra high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.

"PLN has taken its best efforts and will have evaluation to prevent recurrence of today's incident," Cahyani said.

The implementation of the health protocols is crucial and must be carried out consistently to prevent a third coronavirus wave, COVID-19 Handling Task Force member Dr. Falla Adinda has said.

"A third wave (of COVID-19) is not impossible; it may occur if people do not obey the health protocols," Adinda said during a virtual dialogue on 'Let's Wear Masks, Let's Get Vaccinated Quickly', originating from here on Tuesday.

The implementation of health protocols must be continuously encouraged among the public, she added. For that, it is hoped all parties will synergize in educating and disseminating the importance of the health protocols, she said.

"Let's wear masks, keep our distance, maintain good hygiene, avoid unnecessary mobility, and stay away from crowds. If all of this can be consistently carried out by all levels of society, then hopefully, the third wave will not occur," she remarked.

Adinda said the current decline in COVID-19 cases has been possible due to everyone's efforts. Therefore, all parties must continue to collaborate, synergize, and work together to prevent a rise in cases, she added.

"Remind people around us again. Always provide correct information regarding vaccinations and health protocols so that this pandemic can be controlled, the number of cases can be controlled so that we can remain productive amid the COVID-19 pandemic," she said.

Although the number of COVID-19 cases in the country is currently falling, it does not mean an increase in cases will not happen in the future if people are careless and become lax in following the health protocols, Adinda cautioned.

The first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was confirmed in March 2020. According to the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of September 21, 2021, 4,195,958 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Indonesia, while 4,002,706 people recovered and 140,805 have succumbed to the deadly virus. Foreign investors’ confidence in Indonesia is starting to improve, in line with the 8.3-percent investment growth in the second quarter of 2021, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has said.

"In 2021, we are targeting an investment of Rp900 trillion, of which 49.6 percent has been realized. Of the 49.6 percent, foreign direct investment is recorded at 50.5 percent. This means that the trust of global stakeholders in Indonesia has slowly begun to improve," Lahadalia, who is also head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), informed here on Tuesday.

He made the statement during a virtual dialogue on ‘Post Pandemic Economic Recovery: Attracting Investment through Structural Reform’, held by EuroCham and the Investment Ministry/BKPM.

Furthermore, the improving global confidence is evident from European countries emerging as the largest investing countries in Indonesia, the minister said.

According to data from the ministry, in the first quarter of 2021, Switzerland was among the top five countries investing in Indonesia. Meanwhile, in the following quarter, the Netherlands emerged as the third-largest investor in the country, Lahadalia noted.

Hence,  the government will continue to make efforts to provide certainty, convenience, efficiency, and transparency to investors, he said.

Some of the strategies which have been carried out by the government to this end comprise the implementation of the Job Creation Act and the Risk-Based Online Single Submission (OSS) system for investment licensing services.

During Tuesday's discussion, Chairman of EuroCham Julien Steimer informed that a number of European companies in Indonesia have confirmed their commitment to continue investing in the country.

Steimer -- on behalf of the European companies -- also expressed his appreciation for the reforms carried out by the Indonesian government to facilitate the cooperation between European and Indonesian business actors. (Antaranews)

Tauhid Ahmad, Executive Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), said international recognition of Indonesia's capabilities will increase when it holds the G20 Presidency in 2022. "This will show that Indonesia still has the ability to organize the world agenda, such as the World Bank or IMF (International Monetary Fund) agenda," Ahmad told ANTARA on Tuesday.

With the G20 Presidency in 2022, Indonesia will be seen as a country with a stable economy and the ability to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

"As a country that is able to organize the G20 Presidency, we will show our ability to hold international events while having a stable economy and effectively handling COVID-19," he stressed.

However, Ahmad predicted that the G20 Presidency may not have a significant impact on the national tourism sector, noting not all representatives of the G20 member countries will visit Indonesia because they are still worried about the spread of COVID-19.

"Because the meeting will start in February 2022, it will be likely an online meeting. People coming from overseas are few, so it will not have much effect on the tourism sector," he explained.

However, if many G20 representatives come to Indonesia, the tourism sector could be boosted by an increase in hotel occupancy, a rise in tourism, and the purchase of souvenirs at tourist sites, he further added.

"In this situation, the economy is moving but not so much, so it is not profitable for the tourism sector," he stated.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will receive the relay baton of the G20 Presidency from the Italian Prime Minister at the G20 Summit closing ceremony in Rome, Italy, October 2021.

Indonesia then will officially hold the G20 Presidency from 1st December, 2021, to November 2022, under the theme, "Recover Together, Recover Stronger."

The 2021-2022 G20 Presidency is Indonesia's first hosting of the event since the forum was established in 1999. (Antaranews)

Indonesia needs to remain alert for COVID-19 spread from travelers entering the country from several bordering countries that are battling an infection surge, an official from the Health Ministry has said.

"In accordance with the weekly COVID-19 report for September 3-9 2021, Indonesia still needs to be aware of cases that have started and are still surging in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Australia, and Singapore," head of the Center for Health Research and Development of the Health Ministry, Vivi Setiawaty, said on Monday.

Based on a study by the Research and Development Center, infections in countries located on the Indonesian border are still dominated by the Delta variant, while there are no reports regarding the findings of the B.1621 (Mu) variant, he informed.

Meanwhile, at the global level, some countries that are currently experiencing a spike in cases are Israel, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany, Setiawaty said.

"Of the five countries, Malaysia is the only country that has not reported finding the Mu variant," she added.

The factors that have contributed to the acceleration of COVID-19 transmission in these countries include joining mass gatherings, traveling with COVID-19 positive people, visiting high-risk areas such as medical facilities, and vague transmission (because of lack of symptoms, limited testing, or infection caused by other respiratory viruses), Setiawaty informed.

"With the continued variety of findings of new variants, the new variant is the one that needs to be prevented and monitored. The spikes in cases are generally always accompanied by an examination of the viral genome from samples of COVID-19 patients," she said.

Apart from Indonesia, the Delta variant is still dominating cases in several countries, such as Germany, Great Britain, the US, Israel, and Malaysia, where the trend in infections is starting to experience a spike, she noted.

According to the Health Ministry's weekly overview, the second-highest variant after Delta in Germany is Lambda with an infection rate of 4 percent, while cases in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Israel are dominated by the Alpha variant, with an infection rate of 0.68 percent, 0.09 percent, and 0.62 percent, respectively.

"Meanwhile, the second-highest variant after Delta in Malaysia is Kappa with 8.11 percent (infection rate)," Setiawaty disclosed.

Although the number reported outside the Delta variant is still relatively small, monitoring new variants reported in other countries will be important to increase vigilance both in prevention and improvement of Whole Genome Sequencing and the development of science and technology related to SARS CoV-2, she added.  Indonesia has again received five million doses of  Sinovac vaccine in finished form under the 70th batch of vaccine arrival on Monday.

"This vaccine supply has brought the availability of COVID-19 vaccines in Indonesia, both in the form of raw materials (bulk) and ready-to-use, to 262,350,400 doses," spokesperson for vaccination of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, noted in a written statement received here.

Tarmizi remarked that with this 70th stage of vaccine arrival, the number of vaccine doses of Sinovac's CoronaVac in Indonesia had increased to reach a total of 53,776,000.

"This number will continue to increase since on Tuesday (September 21), we will receive another five million vaccine doses of the same brand," she noted.

In line with the government's commitment to expediting the national vaccination program, she noted that the received vaccine doses will be distributed to various regions across the country for immediate use.

“In the next few weeks, we will receive more batches of vaccine doses. This is the government's effort to prevent a vaccine shortage from occurring in our country," she stated.

In spite of the increased availability of vaccines, the spokesperson emphasized that the third dose or booster vaccine is only designated for healthcare workers, as they have a greater risk of being exposed to the virus.

Hence, Tarmizi appealed to the public that if vaccinators were available to offer the third dose of the vaccine to people apart from health workers, then they should immediately report it to the authorities.

Regarding the distribution of vaccines, the corporate secretary and spokesperson for Bio Farma, Bambang Heriyanto, stated that as of September 19, 2021, Bio Farma had distributed 169,114,468 doses of the vaccine to various regions in Indonesia. (Anatranews)

Indonesia's youth will face several challenges in future, including a gap or inequitable access to education, which should be handled, Minister of Finance's Special Staff in the Strategic Communication Department Yustinus Prastowo stated.

"We should figure out how to have more equitable education levels as well as better access to knowledge," Prastowo stated during the InFest Incubation 2021 online talk show observed from here on Monday.

The other area of concern pertains to connectivity challenges in order to connect one region to another in Indonesia as an archipelagic state, he noted.

In addition, he remarked that technological disruption can be a challenge as well, wherein a relevant information today may no longer be so in future.

To this end, he encouraged the younger generation, which would become the nation's future leaders, to not become complacent and continue on the path of self-improvement.

"It is best to not think that what we are doing right now is the peak of achievement to the extent that we are no longer willing to open to other innovations," Prastowo elaborated.

Meanwhile, he emphasized that the youth should also be capable of anticipating, evaluating, filtering, and choosing the best investment based on the correct information.

"Do not become trapped by incorrect flow of information, such as how our government is in constant debt or every infant that was born is saddled with debt," he remarked.

"Do not be scared by them. You have to be willing to look for the correct information," he stated.

Prastowo remarked that the youth should be aware that investment is not just about gaining profits but also about preparing oneself for the future. (Antaranews)

The Industry Ministry has proposed the imposition of warehouse receipt system (WRS) to spur local tobacco absorption in the tobacco industry.

The system is expected to effectively monitor stock of raw material in the warehouse and maintain the commodity's price stability.

"We have initiated the import substitution program and encouraged export of tobacco products. This will bring positive impact to the national economy," acting Director General of Agro Industry of the ministry, Putu Juli Ardika said in a statement here on Sunday.

The move, he continued, would accelerate the government's priority program of the National Economic Recovery (PEN).

"The government could not work alone, we need to work closely with various parties including industry players," Ardika said.

Supports from industry sector, including the tobacco industry, would help the government to revive the national economy.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has actively encouraged the development of the local game industry and continued to promote it.

"For instance, we engaged the local game industry actors in the Tokyo Game Show as well as encourage them to have the ability to market and promote their products," he said at the online Wealth Wisdom 2021 seminar here on Saturday.

Kemkominfo supports Peruri's transformation in postage stamps

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemkominfo) supports product development through transformation and the utilization of digital technology by the state-owned banknote printing company Perum Peruri.

"I support the transformation of Peruri that has developed its products by utilizing digital technology, such as the augmented reality feature on postage stamps," Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate noted in a press statement on Friday.

Digital technology, which has become part of the people's daily lives, can be used for the development of the nation and state, including companies.

"Currently, we no longer see this as hope. Digital has become a reality that we must use for the benefit of our country, nation, and society first and foremost. I certainly hope that the digital technologies, which Peruri is involved in, will continue to grow," Plate stated.

The government signed the First Day Cover of the 50th Anniversary of Peruri's Stamps virtually, bearing the theme "Legacy and Infinity." The stamp, developed by Peruri, applies digital technology and provides detailed information with a code inside.

"We hope that in future, these stamps would continue to be developed and keep up with the times and technology," acting Director General of Post and Information Technology Ismail noted in the same statement.

Stamps are special collectible items that showcase social, cultural, and economic aspects of art, among others.

Hence, the ministry has called for breakthroughs and innovations for evolution in the development of stamps in the near future.

"We cannot deny the fact that the era of globalization is developing rapidly and technology is also advancing. Hence, everything is developed using digital technology, including stamps," Ismail stated.
