VOInews, Jakarta: Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, expressed his appreciation for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)’s support in population development programmes as the country prepares to harness its demographic dividend. The remarks were made during a meeting with UNFPA Country Representative Hassan Mohtashami at the Bilateral Room of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture on Tuesday, 7 January 2025. The meeting also included Wihaji, the Minister of Population and Family Development and Head of BKKBN.

Pratikno highlighted the critical importance of collaboration in achieving the goals of Indonesia’s Grand Design for Population Development (GDPD). He proposed the establishment of a joint secretariat involving BKKBN, Bappenas, and other key stakeholders to drive forward this strategic agenda. “I deeply value UNFPA’s contributions to Indonesia’s population development. Moving forward, we aim to establish a joint secretariat, where the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture will play the role of orchestrator in advancing this initiative,” he stated.

Hassan Mohtashami voiced his optimism about Indonesia’s demographic trajectory, particularly as it approaches the peak of its demographic dividend era in 2035. He noted that the simultaneous decline in the total fertility rate (TFR) provides a substantial opportunity to bolster economic growth and improve societal well-being. “The reduction in fertility rates reflects Indonesia’s success in family planning programmes and enhanced access to quality reproductive healthcare,” Hassan explained.
He further emphasised the need for strategic interventions to optimise the demographic dividend, particularly by improving health, education, and the productivity of the youth population. “Population development must prioritise family planning and actively enhance women’s participation in the workforce through evidence-based approaches,” he added.

The GDPD is currently undergoing revision by the Ministry of Population Development and Family Planning alongside Bappenas. This revision seeks to integrate the National Transfer Account (NTA) approach, which systematically analyses economic flows across age groups. By leveraging this data, policymakers can formulate strategies tailored to optimise the demographic dividend.

Hassan also underscored the necessity of integrating three key approaches: the youth dividend, the silver generation dividend, and the gender dividend. This synergy, he argued, could unlock the potential of the younger generation while elevating women’s participation in the labour market.
“Evidence-based policymaking, underpinned by robust NTA data, can pave the way for inclusive economic growth,” he concluded.
