Indonesia is a maritime country where 2 thirds of its territory is oceans. Indonesia's marine wealth is very abundant. Various innovations have been made to facilitate the use of marine natural resources. One of them is a tool called Smart Fish Detection Technology (SMAF-DT). This innovation created by students of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology -ITS is able to detect areas with lots of fish so that fishermen can spread nets in the area and get maximum results.

Two students, Rafly Zaka Rulloh and Figo Fergiyanto Dachlan obtained the idea from their observation of the fishermen's daily habit of fishing in the Madura Strait.  Both of tham see that the fish catch of fishermen in Bangkalan Regency is relatively small compared to fishermen in other areas so that it affects their economy. Rafly explained that this happened because of the small water coverage area. In addition, the fishing method still uses the old method by spreading nets in the middle of the sea based on instincts, memories and estimates of fishermen regarding their previous fishing history.

To overcome this problem, the team created innovation in the form of a tool that can help fishermen increase their catch. This tool called ‘SMAF-DT’ is installed at the bottom of the boat so that it can detect the presence of fish in the waters by using sensors.

The SMAF-DT utilizes sound waves and ultrasonic sensors to detect fish movements in the sea. Then, the tool is equipped with an alarm light on the boat as an indicator. When the boat starts sailing towards the sea, the sensor begins to detect the movement of the fish in the water. The SMAF-DT is also equipped with position tracking technology via GPS so that it can monitor vessel movements and record historical positions of previous catches. This device can be connected to a smartphone and can be used by people at home to monitor the position of the boat directly through the SMAF-DT application. In addition, the SMAF-DT application is also equipped with the main menu About Fish. This feature is useful for increasing the knowledge of fishermen about the types of fish and their contents.

The Indonesian Embassy invites MSMEs to obtain opportunity for horticultural exports to Singapore

The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore invited micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)  to get opportunities for horticultural exports to Singapore. Trade Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, Rumaksono at the business opportunity webinar of the Al Ahmadi Entrepreneurship Center, Friday (4/12) stated that Indonesia is an agricultural country. It has abundant fruits and vegetables. He invited MSMEs to penetrate the Singapore market. He further said that Singapore relies heavily on imported food. Singapore fulfills its food needs from many countries, such as China, Poland, Australia, India and even the Netherlands.

Indonesia is one of the top 12 countries that supplies food ingredients to Singapore. However, it is still limited for cooking oil, fish, vegetables, and milk. He also emphasized that there is still a big opportunity. He reminded that MSMEs business players must have competitiveness to enter the market of Singapore, starting from price, quality, quantity and consistency.

He also reminded that  not all food and foodstuffs can be exported from Indonesia to Singapore. Meat and eggs are not allowed. As for chicken, fruit, vegetables and fish are permitted. Rumaksono also reminded that if Indonesian MSMEs want to export to Singapore, they must ensure that their colleagues who already have a license from the Singapore Food Agency will run smoothly. Besides the food, other products must also follow the applicable trademark rules, such as the inclusion of the product name, information on ingredients contained, expiration time and many others.

Various innovations related to the Covid-19 pandemic were carried out by Indonesian students. Hand Sanitizer made from stale rice by students of Airlangga University -Unair is the theme of today’s Miscellany. Rice waste that has become stale can actually be used, which is used as a formula for making hand sanitizers. This was done by five students of the Unair Vocational Faculty. According to Yasmin Auliya Hylmi as the team leader, the bioethanol formula in the stale rice with the addition of basil leaf extract is effective at killing various microbes, such as bacteria and fungi, including the coronavirus.

This hand sanitizer has various advantages over the existing ones. The formula does not contain methanol so that it does not cause toxicity effects. The basic ingredients used are natural so they are easy to obtain and cheap because they are made from waste. In addition, the formula is efficient in use. This content acts not only as an antibacterial, but also as an antiviral and anti-fungal. In fact, the idea of utilizing rice waste arose because a lot of rice was wasted for free from food stalls. In addition, hand washing facilities in the pandemic era are still minimal.

For the extraction of basil leaves, according to Yasmin, it is carried out by using a maceration method. Maceration is the process of immersing a sample using organic solvents at room temperature. This hand sanitizer is called ‘Nasi Wangi Gel. Even though it is made from stale rice, of course this formula has a fresh smell and has been proven to be effective at eliminating microbes.
