Timor Leste’s efforts to join the regional organization of Southeast Asia, ASEAN receives full support from Indonesia. The continuation of East Timor's membership in ASEAN itself will soon be discussed by the ASEAN Secretary-General in Jakarta. This was stated by Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno L.P. Marsudi on the sidelines of a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Timor Leste, Aurellio Gutteres at Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

“For the membership of East Timor in ASEAN, the Foreign Minister has just returned from Singapore. Now, ASEAN membership is in Singapore and the issue will also e discussed later in the afternoon and will be discussed also with the ASEAN Secretary General. And the position of Indonesia is quite clear that we support the application of Timor Leste to become ASEAN member countries and we have gone through a long process,” Retno L.P. Marsudi said.

Minister Retno L.P Marsudi added that in relation to Timor Leste's membership in ASEAN, Indonesia still sees how the results of the study relate to it. However, in principle, Indonesia continues to support Timor Leste's membership in ASEAN.//// (VOI/Rezha/ahm)

Indonesia continues to improve its commitment of capacity building cooperation with Timor Leste. In addition to increasing capacity building cooperation, the Government of Indonesia will also continue the education cooperation for students from Timor Leste who study in Indonesia. It was stated by Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi in his press conference after holding a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor Leste, Aurellio Gutteres, at Pancasila Building, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 31st, 2018.

“We agreed to continue, some of which have been conveyed, including educational cooperation for East Timorese students residing in Indonesia and we are also committed to enhancing capacity building cooperation, both in bilateral and trilateral contexts with the state or with others,” Retno L.P. Marsudi said.

Indonesia's commitment in capacity building cooperation with Timor Leste can be seen from the provision of assistance worth 6 million US dollars in the form of sending experts, training, and scholarship to the students of Timor Leste in Indonesia in the period 2013-2017./// (VOI/Rezha/ahm)

The state-owned land transport company, Perum DAMRI plans to open inter-city bus service from Indonesia to Timor Leste, from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara to Dili, Timor Leste as an effort to increase land connectivity. According to Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi in a press conference on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 in Jakarta, the plan received positive response from the Minsitry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Republic of Timor Leste, Aurellio Gutteres.

“In addition, we also discussed the issue on land connectivity, because DAMRI has a plan to open land route service between Kupang to Dili which was positively welcomed also by the Minister of Foreign Affairs,” Retno L.P. Marsudi said.

So far, to support land connectivity between Indonesia and neighboring countries, Perum DAMRI itself has opened inter-city bus services connecting Indonesia with Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, from Pontianak in West Kalimantan, to Kuching, Malaysia and Bandar Sri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.//// (VOI/Rezha/AHM)

Indonesia and Timor Leste as directly adjacent neighboring countries are to enhance their economic cooperation, especially related to infrastructure development in the territory of Timor Leste and border areas between the two countries. According to Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi the increasing of economic cooperation has become one of the main discussions in a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, Aurellio Gutteres at Gedung Pancasila, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 31st, 2018.

“Second, we also agree that the focus of cooperation is to strengthen economic cooperation. In the context of economic cooperation, several issues we discussed together, namely the improvement of infrastructure development cooperation and we discussed the problem, agreed that the construction of Motaain Bridge can be done immediately. Because this bridge is very important to be a bridge of people to people contact,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi said.

In addition, Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi added that with regard to infrastructure development, Timor Leste also expects investors from Indonesia to invest in infrastructure sector, especially the construction of public housing./// (VOI/Rezha/AHM)
