The welcome drink was given when guests sat down and watched the Bedhaya Sidamukti and Bedhaya Kakung Indrawidagda dance performances. Next, they gotsnacks for appetizer such as croquettes and other light snacks. There is a snack that is considered quite special and rare called Garulina. Garulina was the opening snack at the Pahargyan Dhaup Ageng Pakualaman lunch on the first day. Garulina has been around since the era before Indonesian independence. Garulina is actually not a typical Central Javanese food. It looks like the Lapis Legit layered cake, but there is something different, because there is a special layer like vla which is made from fresh milk, eggs and sugar. To get this sweet snack, Pakulaman Temple has to place a special order from the third generation of makers who have been pioneering since the 1950s. In Jogja, Garulina is very difficult to find and is considered rare because it is not sold every day.

TODAY IN HISTORY

Written by

Today in History over RRI World Service -Voice of Indonesia. We start from an event on August 2, 1934 about Hitler.

Adolf Hitler became head of German State with the title ‘Führer’. He was German chancellor in 1933 and leader of Germany since 1934 until he died on April 30, 1945. On August 2, 1934, Hitler became dictator of Germany after President Von Hindenburg passed away. Hitler united position of chancellor and president to be Führer or leader and also made National-Socialist Party which was known with the name ‘Nazi’ as single party in Germany. Nazi was officially dismissed after Germany was defeated in the World War II.

The next event was in 1985, when Delta Airlines flight 191 crashed.

Delta Air Lines Flight 191 was a regularly scheduled Delta Air Lines domestic service from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Los Angeles with an intermediate stop at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). On August 2, 1985, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar operating Flight 191 encountered a microburst while on approach to land at DFW. The aircraft struck the ground over a mile short of the runway, struck a car near the airport, and then collided with two water tanks and disintegrated. The crash killed 137 people and injured 28 others. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the crash resulted from the flight crew's decision to fly through a thunderstorm, the lack of procedures or training to avoid or escape microbursts, and the lack of hazard information on wind shear.

And the last event is that in 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait.

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi soldiers invaded Kuwait. The invasion was the second Iraqi invasion after earlier in 1980 to attack Iran. Regime of Saddam Husein always declared that Kuwait territory was the 19th province of Iraq. The invasion to Kuwait aimed to take over wealth of oil of Kuwait and therefore, regime of Saddam hoped to be able to become leader of Arabic world. But the invasion got negative reaction from International world. The international world and the United Nations condemned the Iraqi invasion and ordered Iraq to get out from Kuwait. Thus, a number of countries led by the United States sent their forces to Persia Peninsula to drive away Iraq. Because of the attack of allies, on February 28, 1991, Iraq ended its invasion in Kuwait.

During his period, President Alberto Fujimori successfully revived the stability of macro economy after the era of President Alan Garcia and brought peace to conflicted countries. President Fujimori was also successful in freeing dozens of hostages that were captured by a rebellious movement led by Tupac Amaru during the attack of Japanese Ambassador’s residence in Lima. Despite of his prominent contributions for the country, President Alberto Fujimaro was also criticized for being a dictatorial leader. A corruption scandal involving the Head of Peruvian Intelligence had degraded President Fujimaro’s popularity. In the end 2000, after the APEC meeting in Brunei, President Fujimaro went to Japan and resigned as the President of Peru by sending a letter of resignation via facsimile. We end our segment -Today in History-with an event from 28th July 1995, Vietnam was accepted as the 7th member of ASEAN.

As the Cold War started to come to an end, the change of international structural system has brought about several consequences for the leaders of Vietnam to re-examine their foreign politics’ policy. The new format of Vietnam foreign politics’ policy that began to be more adaptive for its neighborhood countries was characterized by series of actions and plans supporting the member countries of Association of South East Asian -ASEAN to terminate negative judgment about Vietnam as a threat. Vietnam realized that the new ASEAN focused on striving economic goals. As the attempt to achieve these goals, ASEAN countries firstly had to create stability instead of making demands, for instance, democratization or intervention on other countries’ affairs. The membership of Vietnam in ASEAN was purposed as a strategy to achieve the main goal of ASEAN. The goal was establishing the ASEAN-10 meaning the ASEAN that was constituted by the whole ASEAN countries.
